Livingstonite is a rare mercury and antimony sulfide mineral, forming prismatic crystals with a metallic luster and a characteristic red streak.

## Characteristics Livingstonite is a sulfosalt mineral, chemically a complex mercury and antimony sulfide. It occurs as slender, prismatic or acicular crystals, often gathered in radial or disorderly aggregates. Specimens can also be found in fibrous, matted, or granular forms. Its appearance is typical for many sulfosalts – it has a dark gray to black color and a strong, metallic luster on fresh surfaces, which may dull over time. ## Physical Properties This mineral is relatively soft, with a Mohs hardness of 2. It is opaque and quite heavy, with a density of approximately 4.81 g/cm³. It exhibits perfect cleavage in one direction, making it brittle and easily breaking into smaller fragments or fibers along cleavage planes. ## Colors and Varieties Livingstonite has a uniform color ranging from lead-gray, through steel-gray, to black. It does not form color varieties or commercial types. Sometimes, secondary iridescent coatings may appear on its surface, resulting from oxidation. ## History and Name The mineral is named in honor of the Scottish missionary and explorer David Livingstone (1813–1873), who traveled through Africa. It was first described in 1874 by Mariano de la Bárcena based on specimens found in Huitzuco de los Figueroa, Guerrero State, Mexico. ## Uses Due to its mercury content, livingstonite was locally used as a minor ore of this metal, especially in historical mines in Mexico. Currently, due to its rarity and toxicity, it is of scientific and collector's interest only.

Diagnostic features

## Identification The most characteristic diagnostic feature of livingstonite is its bright red streak, which strongly contrasts with the dark color of the mineral itself. It shares this feature with Cinnabar, with which it often co-occurs. Other helpful indicators include low hardness (2 on the Mohs scale), metallic luster, prismatic or acicular crystal habit, and perfect cleavage. ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals Livingstonite is sometimes confused with Stibnite, which has a very similar appearance (metallic luster, prismatic crystals, low hardness). The key difference is the streak: livingstonite has a red streak, while Stibnite has a lead-gray streak. From Cinnabar, which also has a red streak, it is distinguished by crystal habit – Cinnabar rarely forms elongated prisms, while livingstonite does. Furthermore, Cinnabar is usually red, whereas livingstonite is gray to black. ## Crystal Forms Livingstonite crystals are monoclinic and most often take the form of elongated, slender prisms or needles. They frequently occur as radial or tangled aggregates. Fibrous and massive, granular aggregates are also found.

Geological environment

## Genesis Livingstonite is a low-temperature hydrothermal mineral. It forms in the final stages of crystallization in ore veins, usually in limestone or dolomitic rocks. Its presence indicates specific chemical conditions, rich in mercury, antimony, and sulfur. ## Mineral Associations This mineral often co-occurs with other hydrothermal minerals, especially Cinnabar, Stibnite, and native Sulfur. It is also accompanied by Calcite, Dolomite, Gypsum, and Quartz. At its type locality (Huitzuco, Mexico), it was found in Gypsum in association with Sulfur. ## Localities The most important and historical locality, from which the best specimens originate, is Huitzuco de los Figueroa in Guerrero State, Mexico. Other known localities include the Khaidarkan mine in Kyrgyzstan and Hunan district in China. Occurrences have also been reported in Japan and Spain, but specimens from these locations are much rarer and less known on the collector's market.

## Quality Criteria The most prized livingstonite specimens are those that exhibit well-formed, sharply terminated crystals with a strong, metallic luster. Groups of radial crystals or specimens where livingstonite contrasts with the matrix mineral, e.g., white Calcite or yellow Sulfur, are particularly sought after. Co-occurrence with Cinnabar is also a significant asset, creating visually and mineralogically attractive compositions. ## Popular Localities Undoubtedly, the most classic and desired source of livingstonite for collectors is its type locality – Huitzuco, Mexico. Specimens from there, often from historical collections, are considered exemplary for this species. Good quality crystals also come from Kyrgyzstan.

Care and storage

## Cleaning Livingstonite is a very delicate and toxic mineral. It should only be dry-cleaned, using a soft brush to remove dust. Any contact with water or chemical agents is inadvisable. ## What to Avoid The mineral contains mercury and antimony, so it is absolutely essential to avoid inhaling dust and direct skin contact. Hands should be thoroughly washed after any contact with a specimen. It must not be heated, as this can lead to the release of toxic mercury vapors. It should be protected from moisture, chemicals, and high temperatures. ## Storage Livingstonite specimens should be stored in tightly sealed, labeled containers or display boxes, away from other minerals that it could scratch. Due to its toxicity, it should be kept out of reach of children and pets.
