Lithiophilite

Lithophilite is a rare lithium manganese phosphate, valued by collectors for its intense colors and vitreous luster.

## Characteristics Lithophilite is a mineral from the phosphate group, belonging to an isomorphic series with triphylite (LiFePO₄). It forms a continuous solid solution with triphylite, in which manganese and iron can substitute for each other. Pure lithophilite, with dominant manganese, is much rarer than its iron-rich counterpart. It typically occurs as granular or massive aggregates embedded in the host rock. Well-formed crystals are rare and usually small, typically up to a few centimeters. ## Physical Properties This mineral is characterized by a hardness of 4-5 on the Mohs scale, making it relatively soft. It has a vitreous to resinous luster. It is brittle, and its density is approximately 3.42-3.53 g/cm³. It exhibits distinct cleavage in two directions. Under weathering, it readily alters into manganese oxides, causing it to darken, often to a black color. ## Colors and Varieties Fresh, unaltered specimens of lithophilite display attractive colors: from honey-yellow, through orange, pink, reddish-brown, to greenish-brown. The mineral's surface darkens over time, becoming covered with a dark brown or black crust of manganese oxidation products. No named commercial or color varieties are distinguished. ## History and Name The name lithophilite comes from the Greek words *lithos* (λίθος) meaning "stone" and *philos* (φίλος) - "friend", referring to the presence of lithium in its composition. The mineral was first described in 1878 by George J. Brush and Edward S. Dana based on specimens found in the Branchville mine in Connecticut, USA. ## Uses Lithophilite has no significant industrial application. However, it is a valued and sought-after collector's mineral, especially well-formed crystals with intense color and specimens from classic localities.

Diagnostic features

## Identification Lithophilite is most easily identified by its characteristic, vivid colors (yellow, orange, pink) on fresh fracture surfaces, which contrast with a dark, almost black weathering crust. Its vitreous to resinous luster and occurrence in granitic pegmatites are also important clues. ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals Lithophilite can be confused with triphylite, with which it forms a series. However, triphylite typically has grayish-green, bluish, or grayish-brown colors. From other phosphates, like apatite, it is distinguished by its lower hardness and tendency to darken. Rhodonite can be similar in color, but it is significantly harder (5.5-6.5) and has a different crystal habit. ## Crystal Forms Well-formed crystals are rare, usually prismatic or tabular. Most often, lithophilite forms massive, granular, or fractured aggregates embedded in the rock. It also occurs in radial aggregates.

Geological environment

## Genesis Lithophilite is a primary mineral, crystallizing in complex granitic pegmatites rich in lithium and phosphorus. It forms in the late stages of pegmatitic magma crystallization, under conditions of relatively low temperatures and high concentrations of rare elements. ## Mineral Associations This mineral often co-occurs with other pegmatite-typical phosphates, such as triphylite, sicklerite, purpurite, as well as with quartz, feldspars (especially albite and microcline), lepidolite, spodumene, amblygonite, and beryl. ## Localities The most important and historical localities for lithophilite are in the USA, in the states of Connecticut (Branchville), New Hampshire (Palermo mine), South Dakota (Custer and Keystone area), and California. Significant specimens also come from Brazil (Minas Gerais and Paraíba states), Argentina (San Luis province), Pakistan, Namibia, Finland, and France.

## Quality Criteria The most highly prized lithophilite specimens are those with well-formed, sharp crystals of significant transparency and intense, uniform color (orange, honey-yellow, or pink). Minimal surface oxidation is important. The attractiveness is also enhanced by the contrasting placement of crystals on a light rock matrix, for example, on albite or quartz. ## Market Prices Lithophilite prices vary. Small, massive fragments can be purchased for several tens of Polish zlotys. Specimens with visible but poorly formed crystals cost from 100 to 500 PLN. High-grade miniatures with well-formed, lustrous crystals on matrix fetch prices from several hundred to several thousand PLN, and exceptional specimens can be significantly more expensive. ## Popular Localities Collectors particularly seek specimens from classic US localities, such as the Palermo mine in New Hampshire, known for large masses of lithophilite, and from the Keystone area in South Dakota. In recent years, attractive specimens from pegmatites in Pakistan and Brazil have also appeared on the market.

Care and storage

## Cleaning Lithophilite specimens should be cleaned very carefully, using a soft brush to remove dust. If necessary, a small amount of distilled water can be used, but prolonged soaking should be avoided. After wet cleaning, the specimen must be thoroughly dried immediately. ## What to Avoid Lithophilite is sensitive to acids and strong chemicals. Ultrasonic cleaners and steam cleaning, which can damage the mineral, should be avoided. As a mineral prone to oxidation, it should be protected from moisture and prolonged exposure to air, which accelerate the darkening process of its surface. ## Storage It is recommended to store lithophilite in dry conditions, preferably in sealed boxes or display cases with a desiccant. Due to its relatively low hardness, it should be protected from scratching by harder minerals. It is not sensitive to sunlight.
