Liraite is an extremely rare, dark brown to black phosphate mineral, found exclusively in one locality in Argentina.

Description

## Characteristics Liraite is a very rare, complex sodium, calcium, manganese, and iron phosphate, belonging to the wicksite group. It forms very small, thin, platy crystals, typically less than one millimeter in size. These crystals often arrange themselves into rosette-like or radial aggregates. The mineral ranges in color from dark reddish-brown to almost black and is characterized by a submetallic luster. ## Physical Properties The Mohs hardness of liraite is approximately 5. It is a brittle mineral, with a calculated density of 3.75 g/cm³. It is opaque, and its streak is brown. ## Colors and Varieties The mineral occurs in uniform colors, from dark reddish-brown to black. No color varieties or commercial varieties are known. ## History and Name Liraite was officially recognized as a new mineral by the International Mineralogical Association (IMA) in 2019. Its name honors Dr. Raul Lira, a professor of mineralogy at the National University of Córdoba in Argentina, for his contributions to the study of pegmatites. The type locality and only known occurrence is the Ceferino Namuncurá mine (also known as La Elvirita) in Córdoba Province, Argentina. ## Applications Due to its extreme rarity and occurrence as microscopic crystals, liraite has no industrial applications. It is solely an object of scientific research and is valued by specialized collectors of rare minerals (so-called microminerals).

Diagnostic features

## Identification Amateur identification of liraite is practically impossible. A key indicator is its origin from the only known locality in Argentina. Visual characteristics, such as dark color, submetallic luster, and platy crystal habit in association with other rare phosphates, may suggest its presence. Final confirmation requires advanced analytical methods, such as X-ray diffraction (XRD) and chemical microanalysis (EDS). ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals Liraite can be confused with other dark phosphate minerals found in the same locality, such as staněkite. They differ subtly in crystal form and chemical composition, which is impossible to verify without specialized equipment. ## Crystal Forms Liraite forms very thin, flattened (platy) crystals. They usually occur as small, radial or rosette-like clusters and aggregates.

Geological environment

## Genesis Liraite is a mineral of pegmatitic origin. It forms in phosphate-rich zones within complex granitic pegmatites. It is a product of crystallization in the late stages of pegmatite formation. ## Mineral Associations This mineral occurs in association with other, often rare, phosphate minerals. The most common associations include fluorapatite, staněkite, alluaudite, vivianite, and wolfeite. ## Localities The only confirmed occurrence of liraite in the world is the Ceferino Namuncurá mine (La Elvirita), located in the Pampa de Olaen area, Punilla Department, Córdoba Province, Argentina.

## Quality Criteria The quality of liraite specimens, being a micromineral, is assessed based on different criteria than for large minerals. Specimens with well-formed, sharp, and clearly visible crystals under a microscope are most highly valued. The abundance of crystals on the rock matrix and an attractive association with other rare minerals from this locality are also important. ## Popular Localities Collector specimens come exclusively from the type locality – the Ceferino Namuncurá mine in Argentina. This is the only source of this mineral in the world.

Care and storage

## Cleaning Liraite specimens should only be dry-cleaned. It is recommended to use a soft brush or a gentle stream of compressed air to remove dust. Avoid contact with water and any chemical agents. ## What to Avoid The mineral is brittle and sensitive to shock and abrasion. Ultrasonic cleaners, acids, detergents, and solvents should be strictly avoided. Prolonged exposure to moisture can be harmful. ## Storage The safest way to store liraite is to place it in a sealed, padded "micromount" box, which protects against dust, moisture, and mechanical damage.
