Diagnostic features
## Identification Liddicoatite is most easily identified by its characteristic tourmaline habit – elongated, columnar crystals with distinct, vertical striations on the faces and a typical triangular cross-section. A key feature is its complex, zonal color structure, often visible to the naked eye. Strong pleochroism (color change depending on the viewing direction) is also an important diagnostic clue. ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals Liddicoatite is difficult to distinguish from other tourmalines, especially elbaite, without advanced chemical analysis. Many historical elbaite specimens from Madagascar have been reclassified as liddicoatite over the years. From other minerals of similar colors (e.g., beryl, topaz), it is distinguished by its crystal habit, higher hardness, and lack of cleavage. ## Crystal Forms Liddicoatite crystals are typically prismatic and elongated along the main crystallographic axis. The prism faces are often strongly striated along the crystal axis. The cross-section is a characteristically rounded triangle. Crystal terminations can be flat or composed of many small pyramidal faces.
Geological environment
## Genesis Liddicoatite forms in lithium-rich granitic pegmatites. It originates from complex, multi-stage crystallization processes from residual magmatic fluids, which leads to its complicated chemical composition and characteristic color zoning. Changes in the chemical composition of hydrothermal solutions during crystal growth are responsible for the formation of successive, different-colored layers. ## Mineral Associations This mineral often co-occurs with other minerals typical of pegmatites, such as quartz, albite, microcline, lepidolite, spodumene, beryl (including morganite and aquamarine), and other tourmalines, like elbaite and schorl. ## Localities The most important and historical locality, from which the most famous liddicoatite specimens originate, is Madagascar, especially in the Antsirabe and Betafo regions. Significant deposits have also been discovered in Vietnam (Yên Bái province), Nigeria, Mozambique, Brazil (Minas Gerais), and Russia (Urals). Smaller occurrences have been reported in Canada and the Czech Republic.

## Quality Criteria The most highly valued liddicoatite specimens are characterized by intense, varied coloration and distinct zoning, especially visible in polished slices. Sought-after are crystals of high transparency, without fractures or inclusions, with well-formed, undamaged faces and terminations. "Watermelon" specimens with a pink or red interior and a green rind, as well as those with rare colors like blue or purple, are of particular value. ## Market Prices Liddicoatite prices are high due to its rarity and aesthetic qualities. Small, several-centimeter crystals can cost from tens to several hundred dollars. Large, well-formed specimens of gem quality and spectacular coloration can reach prices of several, or even tens of thousands of dollars. Polished slices showing complex color patterns are also highly valued, and their prices depend on size, color quality, and the aesthetics of the pattern. ## Popular Localities The localities in Madagascar, especially in the Vakinankaratra region, are considered classic and provide the best specimens. Specimens from this locality are the benchmark for the species. In recent years, high-quality liddicoatites from Vietnam have also appeared on the market, rivaling the aesthetics of those from Madagascar.
Care and storage
## Cleaning Liddicoatite specimens are best cleaned with lukewarm water with a small amount of mild soap and a soft brush, such as a toothbrush. After washing, they should be thoroughly rinsed with clean water (preferably distilled) and left to air dry completely or gently dried with a soft, lint-free cloth. ## What to Avoid Ultrasonic and steam cleaners should be avoided, as sudden temperature changes can cause internal fractures, especially in specimens with inclusions. The mineral is sensitive to strong acids, especially hydrofluoric acid. Prolonged exposure to intense sunlight can lead to fading of some colors, particularly pink. ## Storage Liddicoatite is a hard mineral, but it should be stored separately from other stones to avoid mutual scratching. It is best to keep it in individual boxes or pouches. Collector's specimens should be displayed in closed showcases, protecting them from dust and direct sunlight.
