Leiteite is a rare zinc arsenite, forming colorless to white, bladed crystals with a pearly luster.

## Characteristics Leiteite is a rare mineral from the arsenite group, chemically a zinc arsenite. It occurs as colorless to white or grayish, elongated crystals with a bladed or acicular habit. The crystals are often flattened and can form radial or chaotic aggregates. It is a soft and brittle mineral, and its most characteristic visual feature is a strong, pearly luster on cleavage surfaces. ## Physical Properties Leiteite has a hardness of 1.5-2 on the Mohs scale, making it a very soft mineral. It exhibits perfect cleavage in one direction, which, combined with its brittleness, makes specimens very delicate. The luster is distinctly pearly on cleavage planes and vitreous on other surfaces. It is translucent to transparent. ## Colors and Varieties This mineral is typically colorless, white, or pale gray. No named color varieties or commercial varieties are distinguished. ## History and Name Leiteite was discovered in the Tsumeb mine in Namibia and first described in 1977 by a team of mineralogists: E.E. Foord, P.J. Dunn, G.E. Dunning, and J.E. Shigley. The mineral is named in honor of Luís Teixeira-Leite, a Portuguese mineralogist and collector, who first drew attention to this unknown mineral in material from Tsumeb. ## Uses Due to its extreme rarity and small crystal size, leiteite has no industrial applications. It is solely an object of interest for collectors specializing in rare minerals or minerals from the Tsumeb locality.

Diagnostic features

## Identification Leiteite can be identified by its characteristic appearance: colorless or white, bladed crystals with a strong pearly luster on cleavage planes. Its extreme softness (it can be scratched with a fingernail) and perfect cleavage are key diagnostic features. Its occurrence in association with other rare arsenates from Tsumeb is also a strong indicator. ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals Leiteite can be confused with other colorless, bladed minerals with a pearly luster, such as gypsum or talc. It is distinguished from them by its significantly higher density and specific occurrence environment (oxidized polymetallic deposits rich in arsenic). Within the Tsumeb paragenesis, it may resemble schneiderhöhnite, which is, however, darker (brownish-black) and harder. ## Crystal Forms Leiteite crystals are typically elongated, bladed, flattened, and often exhibit striations. They form fan-shaped, radial, or chaotic aggregates. Single, well-formed crystals are less common.

Geological environment

## Genesis Leiteite is a secondary mineral, forming in the oxidation zones of hydrothermal polymetallic deposits rich in arsenic and zinc. It forms at low temperatures as a result of the alteration of primary sulfides, such as tennantite. ## Mineral Associations This mineral co-occurs with other rare secondary minerals typical of the Tsumeb deposit. It is most often associated with: tennantite, reinerite, schneiderhöhnite, stottite, germanite, galena, chalcocite, and quartz. ## Localities The only confirmed and well-documented locality for leiteite in the world is its type locality – the Tsumeb mine in the Oshikoto region of Namibia. This is one of the most famous mineralogical sites in the world, renowned for its extraordinary diversity and quality of secondary minerals.

## Quality Criteria The most prized leiteite specimens are those with well-formed, transparent crystals forming aesthetic, radial aggregates. Contrast with a darker matrix significantly enhances visual and collector value. Crystal size is a key factor – specimens with blades exceeding a centimeter in length are exceptionally rare and sought after. Purity (lack of mechanical damage) is extremely important due to the mineral's fragility. ## Popular Localities The only source of collector specimens of leiteite is the Tsumeb mine in Namibia. As the mine has been inactive for years, no new specimens are entering the market, and all available ones come from old collections, which further increases their value and rarity.

Care and storage

## Cleaning Leiteite specimens are extremely delicate and soft. Mechanical cleaning is highly inadvisable. If absolutely necessary, compressed air (from a safe distance) can be used to remove dust. Avoid contact with water and any chemicals. ## What to Avoid Avoid ultrasonic cleaners, chemical agents, acids, and even water. The mineral is very soft and easily scratched or broken. Protect it from vibrations, impacts, and sudden temperature changes. As an arsenite, mineral dust is toxic – avoid inhaling it. ## Storage Leiteite must be stored in a separate, padded box, away from harder minerals that could damage it. It is best kept in stable conditions, protected from dust and moisture. Due to its fragility, handling of the specimen should be kept to an absolute minimum.
