Langbeinite is a water-soluble potassium-magnesium sulfate, found in marine evaporite deposits and valued as a fertilizer.

## Characteristics Langbeinite is a sulfate mineral, chemically K₂Mg₂(SO₄)₃. It most commonly forms granular or massive aggregates within salt rocks. Well-formed crystals are rare and usually take the form of tetrahedra or cubes with a vitreous, sometimes slightly greasy luster. It is typically colorless, white, or grayish, although the presence of impurities can give it yellowish, greenish, pink, or violet hues. ## Physical Properties This mineral is relatively soft, with a Mohs hardness of 3.5-4. Its density is approximately 2.83 g/cm³. It is transparent to translucent. A characteristic feature is the absence of cleavage and a conchoidal fracture. It exhibits piezoelectric and pyroelectric properties. A key physical property is its solubility in water. ## Colors and Varieties Neutral colors dominate – from colorless to gray. Rarer specimens, colored yellow, green, pink, or violet, owe their color to trace amounts of other elements. It does not form gem varieties. In the fertilizer trade, it is known by names such as K-Mag or Sul-Po-Mag. ## History and Name The name langbeinite was given in 1891 by F. Klockmann in honor of Adalbert Langbein (1834-1894), a German chemist and industrialist who studied potassium salts. ## Uses Due to its potassium and magnesium content and the absence of chlorides, langbeinite is an important raw material for the production of specialized mineral fertilizers, especially for chlorine-sensitive crops. In collecting, rare, well-formed crystals are particularly prized.

Diagnostic features

## Identification The key diagnostic feature of langbeinite is its solubility in water. In field conditions and in a collection, it can be identified by the absence of cleavage, conchoidal fracture, and vitreous luster. Its occurrence is limited to the specific environment of salt evaporites. ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals Langbeinite is sometimes confused with other salt minerals: - **Halite (rock salt)** - differs by its excellent, three-directional (cubic) cleavage and salty taste. - **Sylvite** - also has excellent cubic cleavage and a characteristic bitter-salty taste. - **Anhydrite** - is not as readily soluble in water and exhibits cleavage in three directions. ## Crystal Forms It most commonly occurs as granular aggregates and massive forms. Rarely encountered crystals have an isometric habit, mainly tetrahedral, less often cubic.

## Genesis Langbeinite is a mineral of chemical origin. It forms as a result of the evaporation of seawater in closed or restricted sedimentary basins. It crystallizes in the late stage of this process, in zones rich in potassium and magnesium sulfates. ## Mineral Associations It typically co-occurs with other salts and sulfates characteristic of evaporite deposits, such as halite, sylvite, carnallite, kainite, polyhalite, and kieserite. ## Localities The most important deposits and occurrences of langbeinite are found in Germany (e.g., in potash mines in the Salzdetfurth area - type locality), in the USA (in the famous Carlsbad potash district in New Mexico), in Austria (Hallstatt), in Ukraine (Stebnyk), and in the United Kingdom (deposits in Yorkshire).

## Quality Criteria The most highly valued by collectors are well-formed, sharp, transparent crystals, which are rare. Specimens with unusual coloration (e.g., violet or pink) and intergrowths with other evaporite minerals, such as blue halite or red sylvite, have additional value. Crystal size is also important – larger, undamaged tetrahedra are sought after. ## Popular Localities The best-known collector specimens, including large, well-formed crystals, come from deposits in the Carlsbad area, New Mexico (USA). Classic European localities in Germany and Austria have also historically provided important specimens.

Care and storage

## Cleaning Langbeinite is water-soluble, therefore **it must not be cleaned with water**. For dust removal, only a soft, dry brush, compressed air, or a soft cloth should be used. ## What to Avoid Avoid contact with water, all liquids, and chemicals. The mineral is hygroscopic, so it must be protected from humid air, which can cause its slow degradation and loss of luster. ## Storage Langbeinite specimens require storage in dry conditions. It is best to place them in a sealed display case or box, and in case of high ambient humidity, it is advisable to add a desiccant (e.g., silica gel).
