## Identification Identification of landauite is based on its characteristic crystallography (small, isometric crystals), black color, metallic luster, and occurrence environment (syenite pegmatites). Definitive identification requires advanced analytical methods, such as X-ray diffraction (XRD) or chemical analysis (EDS/WDS), due to its similarity to other black oxide minerals. ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals Landauite can be confused with other minerals from the crichtonite group, such as senaite, davidite, or crichtonite, as well as with ilmenite or magnetite. Distinguishing it in the field is practically impossible. It requires analysis of its chemical composition, especially the content of sodium, zinc, manganese, and titanium. ## Crystal Forms It forms very small, well-developed, isometric crystals, most often in the form of cubes and octahedra, less frequently as more complex combinations of these forms. It usually occurs as single, scattered crystals within the host rock.
Geological environment
## Genesis Landauite is an igneous mineral, crystallizing in the late stages of the evolution of syenite pegmatites, rich in rare earth elements and titanium. It forms in an alkaline environment, in the presence of sodium, zinc, and manganese. ## Mineral Associations This mineral co-occurs with other rare minerals typical of nepheline syenite pegmatites. In its type locality (Lovozero Mountains), it was found in association with microcline, nepheline, aegirine, eudialyte, lorenzenite, murmanite, and ramsayite. ## Localities Landauite is an extremely rare mineral, confirmed in only a few locations worldwide. The most important localities are: * **Russia:** The type locality in a syenite pegmatite in the Lovozero Mountains on the Kola Peninsula. * **USA:** Small crystals have been found in Zion National Park in Washington County, Utah.

## Quality Criteria The quality of a landauite specimen is almost exclusively determined by the quality and size of the crystal. The most desirable are sharp, well-formed, lustrous crystals, clearly standing out from the host rock. Due to their microscopic size, even a 1 mm crystal is considered exceptional. Purity and lack of damage are crucial. ## Popular Localities The most classic and prized specimens, though still microscopic, come from the type locality in the Lovozero massif in Russia. Specimens from Utah in the USA are also sought after by micromineral specialists.
Care and storage
## Cleaning Due to the extreme rarity and small size of the crystals, landauite specimens are usually not mechanically cleaned. If necessary, compressed air can be used to remove dust. Contact with water and chemical cleaning agents should be avoided. ## What to Avoid Avoid ultrasonic cleaners, acids, solvents, and sudden temperature changes. Despite its high hardness, the mineral is brittle and should be protected from impacts and scratching. ## Storage Landauite specimens, usually in the form of micromounts, should be stored in stable conditions, in dedicated perky boxes, protecting them from dust and mechanical damage. Exposure to moisture should be avoided.
