Laflammeite is an extremely rare palladium and lead sulfide, found as microscopic, metallic grains.
Description
## Characteristics Laflammeite is a palladium and lead sulfide with a metallic appearance. It occurs exclusively as very small, anhedral grains, usually not exceeding 100 micrometers in size. These grains are most often intergrown with other minerals, mainly sulfides. Due to its microscopic size, visual features are only discernible under high magnification, where the mineral exhibits a grayish-white color and a strong, metallic luster. ## Physical Properties The mineral is opaque. It is characterized by a high density of 9.37 g/cm³ (calculated value based on chemical composition and crystal structure). Hardness on the Mohs scale has not been determined. The luster is distinctly metallic, and the streak is black. ## Colors and Varieties Laflammeite has a consistent, grayish-white color with a metallic hue. It does not form colored or commercial varieties. ## History and Name The mineral was officially recognized by the International Mineralogical Association (IMA) in 2002. Its name honors J. H. Gilles Laflamme (born 1943), a Canadian mineralogist and specialist in the analysis of platinum-group minerals, working for the Geological Survey of Canada. It was discovered in the Lac des Iles palladium deposits in Ontario, Canada, which is its type locality. ## Uses Laflammeite has no commercial or industrial applications. It is solely an object of scientific and collecting interest, as a very rare component of platinum-group element deposits.
Diagnostic features
## Identification Identification of laflammeite is impossible without advanced analytical techniques. Due to the microscopic size of the grains, its recognition requires the use of a reflected light microscope and chemical composition analysis using an electron microprobe (EDS/WDS). The key diagnostic feature is its unique chemical composition (Pd₃Pb₂S₂). ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals Laflammeite is visually indistinguishable from many other associated ore minerals, such as kotulskite, vysotskite, braggite, chalcopyrite, or pentlandite. All these minerals have a similar metallic luster and occur as fine grains. Certain differentiation is possible only on the basis of chemical analysis. ## Crystal Forms This mineral forms only very fine, anhedral grains, often with rounded or irregular shapes. No well-formed crystals have been observed.
Geological environment
## Genesis Laflammeite is a magmatic mineral, associated with hydrothermal processes within gabbronorite intrusions. It forms in the late stages of magma crystallization, in zones enriched in platinum-group elements (PGE), sulfur, and chalcophile elements. It crystallizes in altered pyroxenites and gabbros. ## Mineral Associations This mineral occurs in paragenesis with other platinum-group minerals and sulfides. It is most often accompanied by: vysotskite, braggite, kotulskite, isomertieite, merenskyite, sperrylite, as well as chalcopyrite, pentlandite, and pyrite. ## Localities Laflammeite is an extremely rare mineral. Its main and best-documented occurrence is the type locality – the Lac des Iles palladium deposit, located approximately 85 km northwest of Thunder Bay in Ontario, Canada. It has also been reported in several other locations worldwide, always in a similar geological environment, including the Fedorovo-Pansky magmatic complex on the Kola Peninsula in Russia.

## Quality Criteria The quality of laflammeite specimens is not assessed based on visual criteria, such as color or form, as the mineral occurs in microscopic form. The only criterion for scientific and collecting value is the richness of aggregates and the certainty of analytical identification. A specimen is valuable if it contains numerous, well-separated laflammeite grains in association with other rare platinum-group minerals. ## Popular Localities The only source of specimens available in scientific and specialized collections is its type locality: the Lac des Iles deposit in Ontario, Canada. This mineral is practically not available on the collector's market.
Care and storage
## Cleaning Laflammeite specimens occur as microscopic inclusions in the host rock and are not subject to cleaning in the traditional sense. Microscopic preparations (polished sections) are cleaned only with compressed air or a very soft, dry microfiber cloth to avoid scratching. ## What to Avoid Avoid contact with any chemicals, especially acids, which can react with sulfides. Preparations should be protected from moisture to prevent oxidation. They should not be heated or exposed to ultrasound. ## Storage Specimens containing laflammeite, most often in the form of polished sections or rock blocks, should be stored in a dry, stable environment. The best solution is specialized micromineral boxes or membrane boxes, which protect the delicate surface from dust and mechanical damage.
