## Characteristics Kusachiite is a very rare mineral from the oxide group, composed of copper and bismuth. It occurs as very small, tabular or short prismatic crystals, rarely exceeding 0.2 mm in size. It usually forms aggregates or appears as single, scattered crystals on the surface of other minerals. Its black color and metallic luster are characteristic, although due to the small size of the crystals, magnification is necessary for observation. ## Physical Properties Kusachiite crystals exhibit a metallic luster. The mineral is opaque. Its hardness and density have not been precisely determined due to the small size of samples and its rarity. ## Colors and Varieties Kusachiite is a mineral of uniform, black color. No color varieties or commercial varieties are distinguished. ## History and Name The mineral was discovered and described in 1995 by Japanese mineralogists: S. Hori, M. Koyama, H. Hori, Y. Kajiwara, G. Matsuo, and A. Kato. The name "kusachiite" honors Professor Isao Kusachi (b. 1940), a Japanese mineralogist from Okayama University, for his contributions to the study of skarn deposits in Japan, including the type locality of the new mineral. ## Applications Due to its extreme rarity and microscopic size, kusachiite has no industrial applications. It is solely an object of scientific and collecting interest for specialized collectors of rare minerals.

Visual distinction is practically impossible without chemical analysis, which would reveal the presence of bismuth as a key component. ## Crystal Forms Kusachiite crystallizes in the tetragonal system, forming very small, tabular crystals with a square or octagonal outline. It occurs as single, overgrown crystals or small aggregates on the surface of the host rock.

Geological environment

## Genesis Kusachiite is a hydrothermal mineral. It forms in contact zones (skarns) between limestones and igneous rock intrusions, such as granodiorite. It forms under oxidizing conditions, in the presence of solutions rich in copper and bismuth. ## Mineral Associations This mineral is associated with other minerals typical of copper-bismuth skarns. At the type locality (Fuka mine), it was found in association with native bismuth, bismutite, bismite, tenorite, malachite, azurite, cuproadamite, conichalcite, calcite, and minerals from the garnet group. ## Localities The most important and type locality for kusachiite is the Fuka mine in Okayama Prefecture, Japan. This is the only confirmed and well-documented locality for this mineral worldwide.

## Quality Criteria The collecting appeal of a kusachiite specimen primarily depends on the sharpness and development of the microcrystals, as well as their abundance on the rock matrix. Specimens with clearly visible, lustrous crystals of a defined, square or octagonal shape are most highly valued. Contrast with a lighter host rock (e.g., calcite) also enhances the visual value of the specimen. ## Popular Localities The only source of collector specimens is the Fuka mine in Japan. Material from this locality is extremely rare and sought after by collectors specializing in mineral systematics and "micromount" specimens.

Care and storage

## Cleaning Due to the extreme delicacy and small size of the crystals, mechanical cleaning is not recommended. Specimens should be protected from dust by storing them in sealed containers. If cleaning is absolutely necessary, compressed air can be used from a safe distance. ## What to Avoid Avoid contact with all chemicals, acids, and detergents. Crystals are brittle and susceptible to mechanical damage, so avoid touching, rubbing, and vibrations. Do not subject it to ultrasound. ## Storage Kusachiite specimens should be stored under stable conditions, in specialized "micromount" boxes that protect them from physical damage and dust. Avoid exposure to moisture and extreme temperatures.
