Kurnakovite is a hydrated magnesium borate, forming colorless or white, vitreous crystals, valued by collectors for their size and form.

## Characteristics Kurnakovite is a hydrated magnesium borate, belonging to the borate group. It forms elongated, prismatic crystals, often of significant size, which can reach several tens of centimeters in length. It usually occurs in colorless, white, or yellowish forms. Specimens are most often transparent to translucent, with a characteristic vitreous luster. This mineral is brittle and relatively soft. ## Physical Properties Kurnakovite is characterized by low hardness, approximately 3 on the Mohs scale, which makes it susceptible to scratching. Its density is low, similar to that of gypsum, and is about 1.86 g/cm³. The luster is typically vitreous, and on cleavage surfaces, it can be pearly. It is a brittle mineral. ## Colors and Varieties This mineral is most often colorless or white. Rarer specimens have a delicate, straw-yellow coloration. There are no named color varieties or commercial varieties. ## History and Name Kurnakovite was first described in 1940. Its name comes from Nikolai Semenovich Kurnakov (1860–1941), a Russian chemist and mineralogist, director of the Institute of General and Inorganic Chemistry of the Russian Academy of Sciences, who made significant contributions to the study of salt deposits. ## Uses Kurnakovite has no significant industrial applications. However, it is a valued and sought-after collector's mineral, especially large, well-formed, and transparent crystals.

Diagnostic features

## Identification Kurnakovite is identified by its characteristic, elongated crystals with a square or rectangular cross-section. Key features include low hardness (can be scratched by a copper coin), low density, vitreous luster, and perfect cleavage in one direction. The reaction to humidity changes (dehydration) is also a diagnostic feature. ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals Kurnakovite is sometimes confused with other borates, such as colemanite, ulexite, or gypsum. It differs from gypsum by its crystal habit and perfect cleavage in one, not three, directions. Colemanite is significantly harder (4.5 on the Mohs scale). Ulexite forms fibrous aggregates, in contrast to the large, prismatic crystals of kurnakovite. ## Crystal Forms Crystals are usually long-prismatic, often terminated by flat faces. They occur as single, well-formed crystals or in radial aggregates, where crystals radiate from a central point.

Geological environment

## Genesis Kurnakovite is a sedimentary mineral. It forms as a result of evaporation of saline borate lakes in dry and hot climatic conditions. It crystallizes directly from solutions rich in boron and magnesium or through the alteration of other, previously formed borate minerals. ## Mineral Associations It most often co-occurs with other borates, such as inderite (which is its dehydration product), hydroboracite, kaliborite, as well as with gypsum, halite, and other evaporite minerals. ## Localities The most important and well-known deposits worldwide, from which the best collector specimens originate, are located in Kazakhstan (Inder deposit). This mineral also occurs in Turkey (Balıkesir province), in the United States (California - Kern and Inyo counties, e.g., the Boron borax mine), and in Argentina (Salta province).

## Quality Criteria The most highly valued kurnakovite specimens are large, fully transparent, single crystals with sharp edges and smooth, lustrous faces. Their completeness (lack of damage) and absence of white coatings indicating dehydration are important. Aesthetic intergrowths and associations with other minerals enhance their appeal, although pure, single crystals are most often sought after. Specimens several tens of centimeters long are considered exceptional. ## Popular Localities By far the most desired specimens by collectors come from the Inder region in Kazakhstan. They are considered the global standard for this mineral in terms of crystal size and quality. Specimens from Boron, California, are also valued, although they usually reach smaller sizes.

Care and storage

## Cleaning Kurnakovite specimens should be cleaned very carefully, using only a soft brush to remove dust. Due to its partial solubility in water, contact with it, especially hot water, should be avoided. Wet cleaning is absolutely not recommended. ## What to Avoid Avoid contact with water and any chemicals. Kurnakovite is sensitive to changes in humidity – in dry air, it can dehydrate and transform into the mineral inderite, losing transparency and becoming white and powdery. It should be protected from high temperatures and direct sunlight. It is very soft and brittle, susceptible to mechanical damage. ## Storage Storage requires stable humidity conditions. It is best to keep specimens in tightly sealed containers (e.g., "membrane boxes") or in display cases with controlled humidity. Avoid storing in dry, warm places. Due to its softness, it should be isolated from harder minerals.
