Kristjánite is a hydrated potassium sodium sulfate, forming tiny, colorless crystals, discovered on the Icelandic volcano Hekla.

## Characteristics Kristjánite is a mineral from the sulfate group, occurring as very small, tabular or platy crystals, rarely exceeding 0.2 mm in length. It typically forms colorless, transparent aggregates or coatings. It is one of the fumarolic minerals, crystallizing directly from hot volcanic gases. ## Physical Properties Kristjánite crystals exhibit a vitreous luster. Due to the small size of the crystals, many of its physical properties, such as hardness or density, have not been precisely determined. The mineral is water-soluble. ## History and Name The mineral was officially approved by the IMA in 2023. Its name honors Kristján Sæmundsson, an Icelandic geologist who made significant contributions to the study of Iceland's geology and volcanism, including the Hekla volcano, where this mineral was discovered. ## Uses Kristjánite has no industrial application. Its significance is purely scientific and collectible, as a rare fumarolic mineral from a specific, known locality.

Diagnostic features

## Identification Identification of kristjánite requires specialized analytical methods, such as Raman spectroscopy or X-ray diffraction (XRD), due to its occurrence as microscopic crystals in paragenesis with other sulfates. Visual identification in the field or even under a microscope is practically impossible. ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals It can be confused with other colorless sulfates found in fumarolic environments, such as thenardite, arcanite, or metathenardite. Definitive differentiation is possible only through chemical and structural analysis. ## Crystal Forms It forms very small, thin, tabular crystals with a hexagonal outline, often grouped into rosette-like aggregates or forming thin coatings on lava surfaces.

Geological environment

## Genesis Kristjánite is a mineral of volcanic origin, formed by sublimation from high-temperature fumarolic gases (above 450°C). It crystallizes directly on volcanic rock surfaces near volcanic exhalations. ## Mineral Associations This mineral co-occurs with other sulfates and fluorides formed under similar conditions, such as arcanite, thenardite, metathenardite, aphthitalite, langbeinite, hematite, ralstonite, and hieratite. ## Localities The only confirmed locality for kristjánite in the world (type locality) is the fumaroles on the summit of Hekla volcano in Iceland, associated with the 2000-2001 eruption.

## Quality Criteria As a microscopic mineral, kristjánite is not evaluated by typical criteria such as size or color. The collectible value of a specimen depends on the abundance of the mineral on the rock matrix and the quality of the analytical documentation confirming its identity. The most valuable specimens are those with well-formed microcrystals, studied and described by specialists. ## Popular Localities The only source of specimens is the type locality – Hekla volcano in Iceland. The material is extremely difficult to obtain due to the conditions on an active volcano.

Care and storage

## Cleaning Kristjánite specimens should not be wet-cleaned, as the mineral is water-soluble. Compressed air or a soft brush can be used very carefully to remove dust. ## What to Avoid Contact with water and other liquids that could dissolve it must be strictly avoided. The mineral is very brittle and sensitive to moisture, so it should be protected from high air humidity, which can lead to its degradation. ## Storage Specimens should be stored in a dry place, preferably in a sealed, airtight container (e.g., a "perky box") away from sources of moisture. Due to its fragility and small crystal size, it requires careful handling.
