Kolskyite is an extremely rare titanosilicate mineral, discovered on the Kola Peninsula, forming microscopic, platy crystals of a brown color.

## Characteristics Kolskyite is a complex sodium-calcium titanosilicate belonging to the murmanite group. It occurs as extremely small, thin, platy crystals, reaching sizes up to 0.3 x 0.2 x 0.02 mm. These crystals often form radial or chaotic aggregates. It is a transparent mineral with a brown color and vitreous luster. ## Physical Properties Due to the microscopic size of the crystals, many physical properties have not been precisely determined. Hardness is estimated at approximately 3 on the Mohs scale. The density calculated based on the formula and unit cell parameters is 2.61 g/cm³. The mineral does not exhibit fluorescence under ultraviolet light. ## Colors and Varieties Kolskyite is monochromatic – it occurs in shades of brown. No varieties are known. ## History and Name The mineral was discovered in material collected in 1997 in the Koashva massif on the Kola Peninsula in Russia. It was described and approved by the International Mineralogical Association (IMA) in 2017 (IMA2017-026). The name "kolskyite" honors the Kola Peninsula (Russian: Кольский полуостров, Kolsky poluostrov), the place of its discovery, known for the occurrence of many rare minerals. ## Uses Kolskyite has no industrial application. Its significance is purely scientific and collectible, as an extremely rare representative of titanosilicates.

## Identification Identification of kolskyite is possible only through advanced analytical methods, such as Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and electron microprobe chemical analysis (EDS/WDS). Visual identification in the field or even under a stereoscopic microscope is impossible without laboratory confirmation. ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals Kolskyite can be confused with other rare titanosilicates from the murmanite group, such as murmanite, lomonosovite, or epistolite, which occur in the same geological environment. The differences between them are subtle and mainly concern chemical composition and structural parameters, which are impossible to assess without specialized equipment. ## Crystal Forms It forms very thin, platy crystals with a micaceous habit, often with rectangular or hexagonal outlines. These crystals group into small, radial or irregular aggregates.

Geological environment

## Genesis Kolskyite forms in the late stages of hydrothermal processes in ultra-agpaitic pegmatites, highly differentiated alkaline intrusions. It occurs in voids and fissures, where it crystallizes from residual solutions rich in sodium, titanium, and silicon. ## Mineral Associations This mineral coexists with other rare alkaline minerals. In its type locality, it was found in association with microcline, nepheline, sodalite, aegirine, eudialyte, lorenzenite, lomonosovite, lamprophyllite, as well as other minerals from the murmanite group. ## Localities The only confirmed occurrence of kolskyite in the world is its type locality: the Koashva massif within the Khibiny massif on the Kola Peninsula, in the Murmansk Oblast, Russia.

## Quality Criteria As a mineral of significance only to collectors specializing in "micromounts" and systematic minerals, the sole criterion for evaluation is the quality of the matrix specimen and the richness of the aggregates. Most desirable are specimens with clearly visible, well-formed crystalline aggregates under the microscope, contrasting with the surrounding rock matrix. Identification must be analytically confirmed. ## Popular Localities The only source of specimens is the Koashva massif on the Kola Peninsula in Russia. All specimens available on the collector's market originate from this single location.

Care and storage

## Cleaning Specimens of kolskyite, due to their extreme rarity and microscopic nature, should only be cleaned under laboratory conditions by specialists. Any attempt at cleaning under household conditions risks irreversible destruction of the mineral. Typically, these specimens do not require cleaning. ## What to Avoid Avoid any contact with chemicals, ultrasound, as well as changes in temperature and humidity. The mineral is very delicate and susceptible to mechanical damage. It should not be touched or exposed to airflow. ## Storage Specimens should be stored exclusively in specialized, sealed "micromount" boxes, protecting against dust, shocks, and humidity changes. Store in stable room conditions, away from sunlight and heat sources.
