Diagnostic features
## Identification Amateur identification of klerite is impossible. Recognition is based on chemical analysis (EDS) to confirm the presence of lead, tellurium, and chlorine, and on X-ray diffraction (XRD) to determine the crystal structure. Visually, they are simply very fine, metallic flakes or scales on the host rock. ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals It can be confused with other fine, metallic telluride or sulfide minerals, such as altaite, galena, or molybdenite, which may co-occur in the same environment. Differentiation without specialized analytical equipment is not possible. Klerite is distinguished by its unique combination of three elements: Pb, Te, and Cl. ## Crystal Forms Klerite forms thin, tabular, pseudohexagonal crystals with a platy habit. These crystals usually group into rosette-like or scaly aggregates. Single, isolated flakes are less common.
Geological environment
## Genesis Klerite is a hydrothermal mineral. It forms in the final stages of crystallization in quartz-gold-bearing veins, under low-temperature conditions. Its presence is associated with mineralization processes involving solutions rich in tellurium, lead, and chlorine. ## Mineral Associations This mineral co-occurs with other tellurides and sulfides. It is most often accompanied by: native gold, altaite (PbTe), galena (PbS), pyrite (FeS₂), chalcopyrite (CuFeS₂), as well as other rare tellurides such as kostovite (AuCuTe₄) and sylvanite (AgAuTe₄). Quartz, which constitutes the host rock, is also an associated mineral. ## Localities The only confirmed and described occurrence of klerite in the world is its type locality - the Kolar Gold Fields mines in Karnataka, India. It is an endemic mineral to this single deposit.

## Quality Criteria The quality of a klerite specimen primarily depends on the richness and visibility of aggregates on the host rock. The most valued samples are those where the crystals, despite their microscopic size, form distinct, well-formed rosettes or dense clusters. The color contrast with the surrounding quartz also enhances the specimen's attractiveness. Due to the nature of the mineral, purity and transparency are not applicable. ## Popular Localities All known collectible specimens come from a single location in the world: the historic Kolar Gold Fields mines in India. These mines are currently inactive, meaning new specimens do not enter the market, and historical samples are extremely difficult to acquire.
Care and storage
## Cleaning Due to the extreme rarity and small size of specimens, klerite is practically never cleaned. Specimens occur as tiny inclusions in the host rock and should be left undisturbed. Any attempt at mechanical cleaning would almost certainly destroy the delicate crystals. ## What to Avoid Contact with any chemicals, especially acids, should be avoided. It should be protected from ultrasound, high temperatures, and any mechanical stress and scratches. Specimens must not be washed in water. ## Storage Klerite specimens should be stored exclusively in specialized "micromount" boxes, protecting them from dust, moisture, and physical damage. It is best to keep them in stable room conditions, away from direct sunlight and heat sources.
