Kochkarite is a rare lead bismuth telluride, forming small, tabular crystals with a metallic luster.

## Characteristics Kochkarite is a rare mineral from the telluride group, composed of lead, bismuth, and tellurium. It occurs as very small, elongated or tabular crystals, rarely exceeding 1 mm in length. Most often, it forms flakes or granular aggregates embedded in quartz or other minerals. It is characterized by a metallic luster and a silvery-white color, which may tarnish upon exposure to air. ## Physical Properties This mineral is opaque and has a relatively high density, approximately 8.26 g/cm³. It exhibits perfect cleavage in one direction, causing it to easily split into thin flakes. Its hardness on the Mohs scale is low, at 2.5, meaning it can be scratched by a copper wire. ## Colors and Varieties Kochkarite typically has a silvery-white or tin-white color. No colored varieties or commercial names are known. ## History and Name The mineral's name comes from its type locality – the Kochkar gold deposit in the Chelyabinsk Oblast, Southern Urals, Russia. It was first described in 1989 by a team of mineralogists: E.M. Spiridonov, N.F. Sokolova, A.K. Gapeev, D.M. Dashevskaya, T.L. Evstigneeva, T.N. Chvileva, and V.Y. Belyaev. ## Uses Due to its rarity and small crystal size, kochkarite has no industrial applications. It is solely an object of interest for collectors specializing in rare minerals and scientists studying ore deposits.

Diagnostic features

## Identification Identifying kochkarite is very difficult without specialized equipment. Preliminary identification is based on its silvery-white color, metallic luster, perfect cleavage, and co-occurrence with other tellurides in gold deposits. Low hardness (2.5) is also a characteristic feature. Definitive identification requires chemical analysis (EDS) and X-ray diffraction methods (XRD). ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals Kochkarite is visually almost impossible to distinguish from other rare bismuth and lead tellurides, such as aleksite, rucklidgeite, tellurobismuthite, or pilsenite. All these minerals form similar, small, silvery flakes with a metallic luster. Differentiation is only possible based on precise chemical composition analysis. ## Crystal Forms Kochkarite crystals are usually very small, tabular or platy in habit, often elongated. They form granular aggregates or disseminated inclusions in the host rock, most commonly in quartz.

Geological environment

## Genesis Kochkarite is a hydrothermal mineral. It forms in quartz-gold veins that cut metamorphic rocks, such as listvenites (altered serpentinites). It crystallizes under relatively low-temperature conditions from solutions rich in tellurium, bismuth, and lead. ## Mineral Associations This mineral co-occurs with other tellurides and sulfides. It is most commonly associated with: native gold, altaite, tellurobismuthite, tetradymite, pilsenite, pyrite, chalcopyrite, and quartz. ## Localities The most important and type locality for kochkarite is the Kochkar gold deposit in the Urals, Russia. It has also been identified in other localities worldwide, including the Salsigne mine in the Aude department, France, and mines in the Kalgoorlie region, Western Australia. However, these occurrences are of scientific significance only.

## Quality Criteria The quality of kochkarite specimens is primarily assessed based on the abundance of the mineral on the rock matrix and its association with other rare minerals, especially native gold. Since the crystals are microscopic, their individual form is less important than the abundance and visibility of aggregates. Specimens from the well-documented type locality (Kochkar) are particularly valued. ## Popular Localities The only source of specimens of collector significance is the Kochkar deposit in the Urals, Russia. Specimens from other localities are extremely rare and usually only available in scientific institutions.

Care and storage

## Cleaning Kochkarite specimens are extremely delicate and small. Mechanical cleaning is not recommended. If dust removal is necessary, compressed air can be used from a safe distance. Avoid contact with water and all chemicals. ## What to Avoid The mineral is soft and easily scratched. It should be protected from impacts and abrasions. As a telluride, it may react with acids. Prolonged exposure to humid air can cause it to tarnish. Do not heat the specimen. ## Storage It is recommended to store kochkarite specimens in sealed, closed "micromount" boxes to protect them from mechanical damage, dust, and humidity changes. Display should be away from sources of vibration and direct sunlight.
