Diagnostic features
## Identification Kassite is difficult to identify without specialized equipment. It is distinguished by its form of thin, platy crystals, often in radial aggregates, and its characteristic adamantine luster. Its brown color and occurrence in a specific geological environment can be a clue. ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals It can be confused with other titanium minerals, such as anatase or brookite, which may have similar luster and color. However, kassite differs in its crystal habit (thin plates) and specific chemical composition. Final identification requires advanced methods, such as X-ray diffraction (XRD). ## Crystal Forms Kassite crystallizes in the monoclinic system. It forms very thin, platy crystals with a hexagonal or rhombic outline. These crystals often combine into radial aggregates, rosettes, or fan-shaped clusters.
Geological environment
## Genesis Kassite is a secondary mineral, formed as a result of hydrothermal processes or weathering. It most commonly forms in carbonatites, where it originates from the alteration of perovskite. It can also occur in fenites – metasomatic rocks surrounding alkaline and carbonatitic intrusions. ## Mineral Associations This mineral often co-occurs with other titanium and zirconium minerals. It is most commonly associated with calcite, perovskite (from which it forms), titanite, zircon, ilmenite, magnetite, and minerals from the pyrochlore group. ## Localities The most important kassite localities worldwide include: - Russia: Afrikanda and Khibiny massifs on the Kola Peninsula (type locality). - Canada: Oka alkaline complex in Quebec. - USA: Magnet Cove in Arkansas. - Brazil: Jacupiranga carbonatite complex in São Paulo.

## Quality Criteria The quality of kassite specimens is primarily assessed based on the size and development of the crystals. The most valued specimens are those with well-defined, sharp crystals forming aesthetic rosettes or radial aggregates. High luster and intensity of color are also important. Contrast with the matrix also enhances the specimen's attractiveness. ## Popular Localities The most known and prized collector specimens come from the type locality on the Kola Peninsula in Russia. Specimens from Magnet Cove in the USA and Oka in Canada are also sought after by collectors specializing in microminerals.
Care and storage
## Cleaning Kassite specimens are extremely small and fragile. They should be cleaned very carefully, preferably using compressed air from a safe distance to remove dust. Avoid contact with water and brushes, which can damage the delicate crystals. ## What to Avoid Avoid all chemicals, especially acids, which can damage the mineral. The crystals are susceptible to mechanical damage, so avoid vibrations, impacts, and contact with harder minerals. ## Storage The best way to store kassite is to place it in a specialized micromount box, which protects the specimen from dust and mechanical damage. It should be stored under stable conditions, away from sources of vibration.
