Diagnostic features
## Identification Kanemite is difficult to identify visually due to the small size of its crystals. Characteristic features include white, spherulitic or rosette-like aggregates composed of tiny, tabular crystals. A key diagnostic feature is its reaction to water and instability in dry air. Identification usually requires advanced analytical methods, such as X-ray diffraction (XRD). ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals It can be confused with other rare, hydrated sodium silicates, such as makatite, magadiite, or kenyaite, which often co-occur with it and are products of its dehydration. Differentiation without specialized equipment is practically impossible. It differs from them in crystal lattice parameters and water content. ## Crystal Forms Kanemite crystals are very small, thin, and tabular, with a hexagonal or rhombic outline. They typically form radial, rosette-like, or spherical (spherulitic) aggregates.
Geological environment
## Genesis Kanemite is an evaporitic mineral. It forms by precipitation from highly alkaline and silica-rich brines in sodium lake environments in desert and semi-desert areas. It crystallizes directly from solution or in bottom sediments. ## Mineral Associations This mineral co-occurs with other alkaline evaporites, such as trona, thermonatrite, halite, as well as with other rare sodium silicates, e.g., makatite (often as a product of its dehydration), magadiite, and kenyaite. ## Localities The most important and classic localities for kanemite are sodium lake deposits. It has been found in the Kanem region by Lake Chad (Chad), in the alkaline lake complex in the East African Rift Valley in Kenya (e.g., Lake Magadi), and in several localities in the United States, including Trinity County, California.

## Quality Criteria The collector's appeal of kanemite is very specific and primarily concerns collectors of rare minerals and micromount specialists. Specimens with well-formed, distinct rosette-like or spherulitic aggregates, contrasting with the rock matrix, are most valued. Due to the microscopic size of the crystals, purity and transparency are not key criteria in the traditional sense. ## Popular Localities Specimens from the classic locality by Lake Chad are historically important but rarely available. On the collector's market, material from alkaline lakes in Kenya (Lake Magadi) and the USA (California) is most commonly found.
Care and storage
## Cleaning Kanemite specimens are extremely sensitive to water and changes in humidity. They should not be cleaned wet. Only very careful dust removal using a soft brush or a stream of compressed air from a distance is permissible. ## What to Avoid Contact with water, acids, detergents, and all other chemicals must be absolutely avoided. The mineral is unstable in dry air and can dehydrate, losing its structure and transforming into other silicate phases (e.g., makatite). It must be protected from changes in temperature and humidity. ## Storage Kanemite requires storage in hermetically sealed containers to maintain a stable humidity level. It is best stored in specialized "micromount" boxes or vials, away from direct sunlight and heat sources.
