Kampfite is a very rare, pale green or colorless mineral from the silicate group, found as small tabular crystals in California.

## Characteristics Kampfite is an extremely rare mineral belonging to the silicates. It occurs as very small, tabular or bladed crystals, usually not exceeding 1 mm in length. It most often forms aggregates or rosettes. It is colorless to pale green and has a vitreous luster. ## Physical Properties This mineral is characterized by a hardness of approximately 3 on the Mohs scale. It is brittle, and its crystals exhibit perfect cleavage in one direction. Due to the small size of the crystals, accurate determination of many physical properties is difficult. ## Colors and Varieties Kampfite is typically colorless or has a pale green hue. No varieties have been distinguished. ## History and Name The mineral's name honors Anthony R. Kampf (born 1948), an American mineralogist and curator at the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County, in recognition of his contributions to mineralogy. It was described and approved as a new mineral in 1998. ## Uses Kampfite has no industrial applications. Its significance is purely scientific and as a collector's item, as a mineral typical of one specific locality.

Distinguishing it with the naked eye is practically impossible and requires laboratory analysis. ## Crystal Forms Kampfite forms thin, tabular or bladed crystals with a hexagonal outline. These crystals often arrange themselves into rosette-like or radial aggregates.

Geological environment

## Genesis Kampfite forms as a result of metamorphic processes within sanbornite-quartz rocks (metacherts). Its formation is associated with barium metasomatism under conditions of contact metamorphism, in the contact zone of granitic intrusions with sedimentary rocks. ## Mineral Associations This mineral coexists with other rare barium minerals, such as sanbornite, quartz, gillespite, celsian, diopside, titanite, tourmaline, alforsite, traskite, and walstromite. ## Localities The only confirmed occurrence of kampfite in the world is the Big Creek (Esquire #1) deposit, located in Fresno County, California, USA. This is its type locality.

The mineral is brittle and sensitive to mechanical damage.
