Diagnostic features
## Identification Identification of juanite is impossible based on visual characteristics, as it is a mixture and looks identical to its components (xonotlite, tobermorite) or other white, fibrous silicates. The only reliable method of identification is laboratory analysis, e.g., X-ray diffraction (XRD), which will reveal its polymineralic nature. A key clue is the origin of the specimen from the type locality in Crestmore, California. ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals Juanite is visually indistinguishable from xonotlite, tobermorite, okenite, and many minerals from the zeolite group. All of them can form white, fibrous aggregates with a silky luster. Without knowledge of the locality and advanced research, differentiation is not possible. ## Crystal Forms Juanite does not form well-developed crystals. It occurs exclusively as felted, fibrous aggregates, often forming veins or radial clusters.
Geological environment
## Genesis Juanite formed under conditions of contact metamorphism, in the contact zone of an acidic magma intrusion with limestones. It is a product of metasomatic processes within calc-silicate skarns. ## Mineral Associations In the type locality (Crestmore, California), juanite occurs in association with other skarn minerals, such as diopside, wollastonite, vesuvianite, as well as the minerals of which it is a mixture – xonotlite and tobermorite. ## Localities The only confirmed and historically important locality from which juanite was described is the quarries in Crestmore, Riverside County, California, USA. Specimens from this locality are the only ones that have historical and collector value under this name.

## Quality Criteria The collector's value of juanite is almost exclusively historical. The most desirable specimens are those from the type locality in Crestmore, preferably with an old label confirming their origin. Visual quality is of secondary importance, although well-formed, pure white fibrous aggregates are more valued. Provenance and the historical context of the specimen as a discredited species are key. ## Popular Localities The only locality from which historical juanite specimens originate is Crestmore, California. This material is not commercially mined.
Care and storage
## Cleaning Specimens should only be dry-cleaned, using a soft brush to remove dust. Due to the fibrous and potentially porous nature of the mixture, contact with water and other liquids should be avoided, as they could penetrate the structure and weaken it. ## What to Avoid Ultrasonic cleaners should be absolutely avoided, as they could destroy the delicate, fibrous aggregates. Contact with acids and other chemicals should also be avoided. The material is brittle and sensitive to impact. ## Storage It is recommended to store specimens in closed boxes or display cases to protect them from dust and mechanical damage. Due to their brittleness, they should not be stored loosely with harder minerals.
