Joaquinite-(Ce) is a very rare mineral from the cyclosilicate group, prized for its honey-yellow, lustrous crystals found in serpentinites.

## Characteristics Joaquinite-(Ce) is a complex cyclosilicate of barium, cerium, titanium, sodium, and iron, belonging to the joaquinite group. It forms small, tabular or short-prismatic crystals, which often occur as radial or spherulitic aggregates. Typical specimens consist of tiny, lustrous crystals grown on a host rock, most commonly natrolite or crossite. Due to its exceptional rarity and attractive appearance, it is a highly valued collector's mineral. ## Physical Properties Joaquinite-(Ce) crystals are characterized by a vitreous to silky luster. They are transparent to translucent. The Mohs hardness is 5.5, and the density ranges from 3.99 to 4.01 g/cm³. The mineral exhibits weak, unidirectional cleavage. ## Colors and Varieties Joaquinite-(Ce) occurs in characteristic shades from light yellow, through honey-yellow, yellowish-brown, to brown. It has no named commercial or color varieties. ## History and Name The mineral was first described in 1909 by George D. Louderback based on specimens found in San Benito County, California, USA. The name "joaquinite" comes from the nearby Diablo Range mountains, a part of which is known as Joaquin Ridge. The suffix "-(Ce)" was added later, according to mineral nomenclature rules, to indicate cerium as the dominant rare earth element in its chemical composition. ## Uses Due to its extreme rarity and small crystal size, joaquinite-(Ce) has no industrial applications. Its only significance is scientific and as a collector's item.

Key to identification is its specific occurrence environment: in natrolite veins cutting through serpentinites. ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals It can be confused with other yellow minerals occurring in similar parageneses. From **benitoite**, with which it often co-occurs, it is distinguished by color (benitoite is blue or colorless) and crystal habit. From **neptunite** (black to dark red), it differs in color. Identification may require advanced analytical methods, such as EDS spectroscopy, due to its similarity to other minerals in the joaquinite group. ## Crystal Forms Crystals are typically small, tabular or short-prismatic, often terminated by pyramids. They most commonly form radial or spherulitic aggregates and clusters, as well as groups of small crystals grown on the host rock.

Geological environment

## Genesis Joaquinite-(Ce) is a low-temperature hydrothermal mineral. It forms in the final stages of crystallization in veins and fractures cutting through metamorphosed rocks, mainly serpentinites. Its formation is associated with the activity of sodium-rich solutions that alter ultramafic rocks. ## Mineral Associations This mineral most often occurs in association with benitoite, neptunite, natrolite, crossite (riebeckite), joaquinite-(La), albite, and serpentine. The paragenesis with benitoite and neptunite from the San Benito locality is classic and world-renowned. ## Localities The most important and best-known worldwide locality, which is also the type locality, is the Dallas Gem Mine (Benitoite Gem Mine) in San Benito County, California, USA. This is the only place where joaquinite-(Ce) occurs in well-formed, collectible specimens in significant quantities. It has also been reported in small amounts in the Ilímaussaq complex in Greenland.

## Quality Criteria The most highly valued joaquinite-(Ce) specimens are those with well-formed, sharp, and undamaged crystals of intense, honey-yellow color and strong luster. Crystals set on contrasting white natrolite, often in association with blue benitoite or black neptunite, are particularly desirable. Crystal size is a key factor – larger, well-formed crystals are much rarer and more valuable. The aesthetic arrangement of crystals on the matrix also significantly increases the specimen's value. ## Popular Localities The only source of valuable collector specimens is the Dallas Gem Mine in San Benito County, California, USA. Specimens from this locality are considered the global standard for this mineral.

Care and storage

## Cleaning Specimens should be cleaned very carefully, using a soft brush to remove dust. If washing is necessary, distilled water can be used, avoiding a strong stream. The specimen should be dried as quickly and thoroughly as possible, preferably with compressed air. ## What to Avoid Avoid contact with acids and other chemicals that can damage delicate crystals. Ultrasonic cleaners should not be used. The mineral is sensitive to sudden temperature changes. Although not particularly light-sensitive, prolonged exposure to intense sunlight is not recommended. ## Storage Joaquinite-(Ce) specimens are usually small and fragile, so it is best to store them in separate, padded collector boxes to prevent mechanical damage and contact with harder minerals.
