Diagnostic features
## Identification Jimboite is primarily identified by its unique, intense pinkish-red color, vitreous luster, and specific occurrence environment. Its small, prismatic crystals are also a characteristic feature. However, definitive identification requires advanced analytical methods, such as X-ray diffraction (XRD). ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals Jimboite can be confused with other pink or red manganese minerals, such as rhodochrosite or rhodonite. It differs from rhodochrosite (a carbonate) by its lack of reaction with hydrochloric acid, and from rhodonite (a silicate) by its hardness and crystal form. Kotoite, with which it often co-occurs, is usually colorless or pale gray. ## Crystal Forms Jimboite crystals are typically small and well-formed, adopting the shape of short prisms or dipyramids in the orthorhombic system. They often form small granular aggregates or grow on other minerals.
Geological environment
## Genesis Jimboite is a mineral of metamorphic origin. It forms as a result of contact metamorphism of manganese ore deposits that have been subjected to magmatic intrusions. This process occurs at high temperatures and leads to the recrystallization of primary manganese minerals in the presence of boron. ## Mineral Associations This mineral occurs in association with other rare manganese and boron minerals. It most commonly co-occurs with kotoite, suanite, rhodochrosite, galaxite, tephroite, and pyrochroite. The presence of these minerals is a key indicator when searching for jimboite. ## Localities The most important and classic locality (type locality) is the Kaso mine in Tochigi Prefecture, Japan. This is the only place from which well-formed, crystalline specimens originate. The mineral has also been reported in the Pilanesberg intrusive complex in the Republic of South Africa and in a few other, rare localities worldwide, but specimens from these places are usually microscopic and of no collector significance.

## Quality Criteria The most highly valued jimboite specimens are those with well-formed, sharply terminated crystals of intense, reddish-purple color and good transparency. Crystal size is a key factor – any specimen with crystals exceeding 1-2 mm is considered exceptional. Contrasting placement on a light rock matrix, for example with white kotoite, significantly enhances the value and aesthetics of the specimen. ## Popular Localities The only source of collectible jimboite specimens is its type locality – the Kaso mine in Japan. Specimens from this location are extremely sought after and represent a classic in collections of rare minerals ("rare species").
Care and storage
## Cleaning Due to their small size and rarity, jimboite specimens rarely require cleaning. If necessary, use only compressed air to remove dust. Avoid contact with water and any chemicals. ## What to Avoid Avoid ultrasonic cleaners, steam cleaning, and all acids and bases. The mineral is sensitive to sudden temperature changes. Protect it from direct sunlight, which can cause its intense color to fade. ## Storage Jimboite specimens, due to their small size and fragility, should be stored in dedicated, padded "micromount" boxes. Protect from dust, moisture, and vibrations. Display should be in stable conditions, away from heat and light sources.
