Jentschite is an extremely rare lead, thallium, arsenic, and antimony sulfosalt, forming tiny, metallic crystals in dolomite deposits.

## Characteristics Jentschite is a complex sulfosalt of lead, thallium, arsenic, and antimony. It forms very small, elongated, prismatic or acicular crystals, rarely exceeding 1-2 mm in length. They usually occur as loosely arranged aggregates or grow on other minerals. The mineral is opaque, black, sometimes with a reddish tint, and characterized by a strong, metallic luster. ## Physical Properties The luster of jentschite is metallic. The mineral is opaque. Its density, calculated based on chemical composition and unit cell parameters, is 5.61 g/cm³. Hardness has not been precisely measured due to the small size and rarity of crystals, but like other sulfosalts, it is a soft mineral. ## Colors and Varieties Jentschite is black, sometimes with a visible reddish surface tint. No color or commercial varieties are distinguished. ## History and Name The mineral was approved by the IMA in 1996. Its name honors Fritz Jentsch (1913-1996), a Swiss mineral collector who found the first specimens of this mineral in the Lengenbach quarry. It was described by a team of mineralogists: W. G. Mumme, W. H. Paar, S. J. Mills, and A. J. Criddle. ## Uses Due to its extreme rarity and microscopic crystal size, jentschite has no industrial applications. It is solely an object of scientific interest and a valued acquisition for advanced systematic and regional collections.

Diagnostic features

## Identification Identification of jentschite based on visual characteristics is practically impossible. It is indistinguishable from many other rare sulfosalts occurring in the same localities. Key indicators are: locality (Lengenbach quarry), paragenesis with other thallium minerals, and black color with metallic luster. Definitive identification requires advanced analytical methods, such as X-ray microanalysis (EDS/WDS) to determine chemical composition. ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals Jentschite can be confused with numerous other sulfosalts from Lengenbach, such as hutchinsonite, wallisite, imhofite, sartorite, or baumhauerite. All these minerals form small, dark crystals with a metallic luster. They differ only in chemical composition, which is impossible to verify without specialized equipment. ## Crystal Forms Jentschite forms small, elongated crystals with a prismatic or acicular habit. They usually occur as single, overgrown crystals or small, loose aggregates in fissures of the host rock.

Geological environment

## Genesis Jentschite is a low-temperature hydrothermal mineral. It forms in voids and fissures of Triassic dolomites (dolomitic marbles) that have undergone metamorphism and metasomatism. ## Mineral Associations This mineral coexists with a rich assemblage of other rare sulfosalts, especially those containing arsenic, antimony, lead, and thallium. Its most common associated minerals include realgar, orpiment, hutchinsonite, wallisite, imhofite, sartorite, baumhauerite, and pyrite. ## Localities The most important and classic locality for jentschite is the Lengenbach quarry in the Binn Valley (Binntal) in Valais canton, Switzerland. This is its type locality, from which the vast majority of known specimens originate. It has also been reported from the Jas Roux mine in the French Hautes-Alpes.

## Quality Criteria The quality of jentschite specimens is primarily assessed based on the size and development of the crystals. Even a single, sharply terminated crystal 1-2 mm long is considered a high-grade specimen. An additional advantage is the richness and aesthetics of associated minerals, especially contrasting combinations with red realgar. Specimens are almost exclusively micromounts. ## Popular Localities The only source for acquiring prized collector specimens is the Lengenbach quarry in Switzerland. This locality is world-renowned for its unique assemblage of sulfosalts and is a destination for specialized collectors.

Care and storage

## Cleaning Due to extreme toxicity and fragility, mechanical or chemical cleaning is absolutely inadvisable. Any contaminants (dust) should be removed only with a stream of compressed air or very carefully with a soft, dry brush. Avoid contact with water. ## What to Avoid **The mineral is extremely toxic.** It contains thallium and arsenic – two substances very dangerous to health. Direct skin contact, inhalation of dust, and any possibility of ingestion must be strictly avoided. It must not be heated, as this can release toxic fumes. It should be protected from acids and other chemicals. After any potential contact with a specimen, hands should be thoroughly washed. ## Storage Jentschite specimens must be stored in tightly sealed, clearly labeled containers (e.g., "perky box" type), with a warning label about toxicity. They should be kept away from children, pets, and food. It is recommended to store them in a separate, dedicated place for toxic minerals.
