Jacquesdietrichite is a very rare copper hydroxyborate, forming microscopic, blue, platy crystals.

## Characteristics Jacquesdietrichite is a copper hydroxyborate with a very complex structure. It occurs as extremely small, platy or bladed crystals, rarely exceeding 0.2 mm in length. These crystals often form rosette-like or radial aggregates, as well as thin coatings and crusts on host rocks. Due to the microscopic size of the crystals, its visual features are difficult to observe without specialized equipment. ## Physical Properties The crystals exhibit a vitreous luster. The Mohs hardness is estimated at 2. The mineral is brittle. The density calculated from the chemical formula and unit cell parameters is 3.53 g/cm³. ## Colors and Varieties Jacquesdietrichite has a characteristic, light blue or azure color. No varieties have been distinguished. ## History and Name The mineral was approved by the IMA in 2002. Its name honors Jacques Dietrich (1927-2003), a French geologist and mineralogist, who was a professor at the University of Geneva and curator of its museum. He made significant contributions to the geological research of the Western Alps. ## Applications Jacquesdietrichite has no industrial application. It is solely an object of interest for collectors specializing in rare minerals and a subject of scientific research.

## Identification Identification of jacquesdietrichite under amateur conditions is practically impossible. It requires advanced analytical methods, such as X-ray diffraction (XRD) or spectroscopy. Preliminary indications may include its light blue color, the specific form of microscopic crystals (thin plates, blades), and co-occurrence with other rare copper minerals in a specific geological environment. ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals It can be confused with many other secondary blue copper minerals, such as wroewolfeite, langite, posnjakite, or spangolite. Definitive differentiation is possible only based on chemical and crystallographic analysis. ## Crystal Forms It forms very small, thin, platy crystals with a hexagonal or rhombic outline, as well as bladed crystals. They usually occur as rosette-like, radial, or irregular clusters and aggregates.

Geological environment

## Genesis Jacquesdietrichite is a secondary mineral, forming in the oxidation zones (gossans) of polymetallic deposits. It forms as a result of the weathering of primary ore minerals, mainly chalcopyrite, in the presence of boron-rich solutions. ## Mineral Associations This mineral co-occurs with other secondary copper and boron minerals. In its type locality (Tsumeb mine), it was found in association with anglesite, gypsum, tenorite, quartz, chalcocite, hematite, ludlockite, and wroewolfeite. ## Localities The only confirmed and described occurrence of jacquesdietrichite in the world is its type locality – the famous Tsumeb mine in Namibia. This is one of the most renowned mineralogical sites in the world, famous for its immense diversity and well-formed crystals of rare minerals.

## Quality Criteria The quality of jacquesdietrichite specimens is assessed primarily based on the richness and aesthetics of the microcrystal aggregates on the rock matrix. The most prized specimens are those with clearly formed, rosette-like clusters of intense blue color, contrasting with the substrate. Due to the microscopic nature of the mineral, the quality of the specimen viewed under magnification is crucial. ## Popular Localities The only source of specimens is the Tsumeb mine in Namibia. As the mine has been inactive for years, new specimens do not appear on the market, and all available ones come from old collections.

Care and storage

## Cleaning Specimens should be cleaned very carefully, using compressed air to remove dust. Due to the extreme brittleness and small size of the crystals, any mechanical contact, including with a soft brush, is risky. Contact with water is not recommended. ## What to Avoid Contact with acids and other chemicals that can destroy the mineral must be absolutely avoided. The crystals are very brittle and sensitive to mechanical damage. They should be protected from vibrations and impacts. ## Storage Jacquesdietrichite specimens should be stored in stable conditions, in closed "micromount" containers that protect them from dust, moisture, and physical damage. They should not be exposed to direct sunlight.
