Diagnostic features
## Identification The key diagnostic feature is the form of small, cubic crystals with a vitreous luster. Its solubility in water is unique, but this is a destructive and not recommended test. Reliable identification is almost exclusively possible based on the locality (characteristic ultramafic pegmatites) and using advanced analytical methods, such as EDS spectroscopy. ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals Iwanjukite-Na can be confused with other colorless, cubic minerals from the same locality, such as sodalite or villiaumite. Villiaumite is also soluble in water, but usually has a pink or red color. Sodalite is much harder (5.5-6) and does not dissolve in water. It can only be distinguished from other microminerals of the iwanjukite group by chemical analysis. ## Crystal Forms The mineral crystallizes in the isometric system, forming distinct crystals with a cubic habit. The faces of the cube may be modified by other forms. It also occurs as granular aggregates composed of small, intergrown crystals.
Geological environment
## Genesis Iwanjukite-Na is a hydrothermal mineral, associated with a unique geological environment of hyperalkaline (agpaitic) pegmatites. It forms in the late stages of crystallization in voids and fractures within alkaline massifs, under conditions of extreme saturation with sodium and other elements. ## Mineral Associations This mineral occurs in association with other rare alkaline minerals. The most common associations include aegirine, lomonosovite, mosandrite-(Ce), natrosilite, sodalite, umbite, and villiaumite. ## Localities The only confirmed occurrence of iwanjukite-Na in the world is its type locality – Mount Koashva within the Khibiny Alkaline Massif on the Kola Peninsula in Russia. This is a classic locality for many rare alkaline minerals.

## Quality Criteria For such a rare micromineral, specimens with sharp, well-formed, and fully transparent crystals are most highly valued. An ideal collector's specimen is a distinct, single cube (or group thereof) set on a contrasting rock matrix, e.g., on dark aegirine. The size of the crystal, even if measured in fractions of a millimeter, is crucial for its value. ## Popular Localities The only source of iwanjukite-Na specimens is the Khibiny Alkaline Massif on the Kola Peninsula in Russia. All materials available on the collector's market come from this single location.
Care and storage
## Cleaning Iwanjukite-Na specimens **must not be wet cleaned** or even exposed to humid air. The mineral is soluble in water, which leads to its irreversible destruction. Dust should only be removed dry, using a soft brush or carefully blowing it off with a photographic air blower. ## What to Avoid Contact with water, water vapor, alcohol, and all other liquids must be strictly avoided. Storage in damp rooms (e.g., basements) is also not recommended. Sudden temperature changes are not advisable, but moisture is the greatest threat. ## Storage Storage must take place in completely dry conditions. It is recommended to keep specimens in tightly sealed containers, preferably with a desiccant (e.g., silica gel). Display should only be in sealed display cases or "perky box" type containers.
