Description
## Characteristics Itsiite is a silicate mineral, belonging to the rare borosilicates. It forms colorless, transparent, well-formed crystals with a platy or short-prismatic habit. It is vitreous and, due to its rarity, is primarily an object of scientific and collecting interest. ## Physical Properties The Mohs hardness of itsiite is 5. It is characterized by a vitreous luster and is transparent. Its density is relatively high for a silicate, approximately 4.15 g/cm³. ## Colors and Varieties This mineral is colorless. No colored varieties are known. ## History and Name Itsiite was officially recognized as a new mineral by the International Mineralogical Association (IMA) in 2014. Its name comes from its discovery locality – the Itsindro pegmatite field in Madagascar, which is its only known occurrence. ## Applications Due to its extreme rarity, itsiite has no industrial applications. It is solely a mineral of scientific and collecting significance.

## Identification Identification is based on its appearance (colorless, transparent crystals), relatively high density, and specific occurrence environment. Positive identification requires advanced analytical methods, such as chemical composition analysis. ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals It can be confused with other colorless pegmatite minerals, such as quartz, danburite, or beryl. It differs from quartz by its lower hardness and different crystal form. It differs from danburite and beryl by its tetragonal crystallographic system and significantly higher density. ## Crystal Forms It crystallizes in the tetragonal system, forming platy or short, prismatic crystals.
Geological environment
## Genesis Itsiite forms in the final stages of crystallization of granitic pegmatites, within miarolitic cavities. ## Mineral Associations It occurs in association with danburite, anorthite, and minerals from the celsian-hyalophane series. ## Localities The only confirmed locality in the world is the Itsindro pegmatite field in the Fianarantsoa Province, Madagascar.

## Quality Criteria Well-formed, transparent crystals with distinct luster and no damage are most highly valued. Specimens on rock matrix, in association with other minerals, especially danburite, are particularly valuable. ## Popular Localities The only source of specimens is Madagascar (Itsindro pegmatite field).
Care and storage
## Cleaning Specimens should be cleaned only with a soft brush and distilled water. Ultrasonic cleaners are not recommended due to the mineral's good cleavage. ## What to Avoid Avoid contact with strong acids, especially hydrofluoric acid. The mineral is sensitive to sudden temperature changes, which can cause fractures along cleavage planes. ## Storage Store in a separate, padded box to prevent scratches from harder minerals. Protect from dust and impacts.
