Isolueshite is a rare mineral of the perovskite group, being the cubic (isometric) polymorphic variety of lueshite.

## Characteristics Isolueshite is a sodium niobium oxide with the chemical formula NaNbO₃, belonging to the perovskite group. It is the cubic (isometric) polymorphic variety of orthorhombic lueshite. It forms small, well-formed cubic crystals, rarely exceeding a few millimeters in size. It also occurs as granular aggregates or inclusions in other minerals. Its appearance is characteristic – it has a steel-gray to black color and a metallic luster. ## Physical Properties The Mohs hardness of isolueshite is 5.5, making it a relatively scratch-resistant mineral. It has a submetallic to metallic luster and is opaque. The density of the mineral is quite high, around 4.76 g/cm³, which is noticeable even in small specimens. ## Colors and Varieties This mineral is typically steel-gray, brownish-black, or black. It does not form colored or commercial varieties. Its only variety is lueshite, with which it forms a polymorphic pair. ## History and Name The name "isolueshite" refers to its cubic (isometric) crystallographic system and its relationship to lueshite, its orthorhombic counterpart. The mineral was first described by Roger H. Mitchell in 1996 based on material from the type locality. ## Applications Due to its rarity, isolueshite has no industrial applications. It is solely an object of scientific interest and a valued collector's mineral.

## Genesis Isolueshite is a mineral of magmatic origin. It forms as a primary component in silica-undersaturated and alkali-rich rocks, such as carbonatites and agpaitic nepheline syenites. It crystallizes in the late stages from highly alkaline, niobium-rich magmatic melts. ## Mineral Associations This mineral co-occurs with other rare minerals typical of its formation environment. In nepheline syenites, these include nepheline, sodalite, eudialyte, lorenzenite, and lueshite. In carbonatites, it is associated with calcite, dolomite, pyrochlore, and natroniobite. ## Localities The most important isolueshite localities in the world include the type locality in Lueshe in the Democratic Republic of Congo, the alkaline massifs of the Kola Peninsula in Russia (especially Kovdor and Khibiny), the Ilímaussaq complex in Greenland, and the famous Mont Saint-Hilaire locality in Quebec, Canada.

## Quality Criteria The most highly prized isolueshite specimens are those with sharp, fully developed cubic crystals, set on a contrasting matrix (e.g., on white nepheline or calcite). Crystal size is a key factor influencing value, as most are microscopic. Specimens from renowned, classic localities, such as Mont Saint-Hilaire or the Kola Peninsula, are particularly sought after by collectors. ## Popular Localities Specimens from the Kovdor and Khibiny massifs in Russia and from Mont Saint-Hilaire in Canada are considered the best for collectors. They provide the most beautiful, well-formed microcrystals, often in interesting associations with other rare minerals.

Care and storage

## Cleaning Isolueshite specimens should be cleaned very carefully, using a soft brush and distilled water. Due to the small size of the crystals, mechanical washing is risky. Ultrasonic cleaners are not recommended, as they can cause fragile crystals to detach from the matrix. ## What to Avoid The mineral is sensitive to strong acids. Contact with chemicals and sudden temperature changes should be avoided. Despite a hardness of 5.5, the crystals are brittle and susceptible to mechanical damage, so they should be protected from impacts and falls. ## Storage Collector's specimens of isolueshite are best stored in closed mineralogical boxes that protect against dust and damage. It is not sensitive to sunlight, but standard practice is to store it under stable humidity and temperature conditions.
