Iquiqueite is an extremely rare borate and chromate, known exclusively from a single locality in the Atacama Desert, Chile.
Description
## Characteristics Iquiqueite is a very rare mineral that forms small, most often microscopic crystals. They typically have the form of rhombohedra with well-developed faces. Due to their size, rarely exceeding 0.5 mm, specimens of this mineral are most often available as so-called "micromounts" (microscopic preparations). ## Physical Properties This mineral is characterized by a vitreous luster and is transparent. Its density, calculated based on chemical composition and crystal structure, is 2.02 g/cm³. Hardness on the Mohs scale has not yet been determined, but due to its composition and water solubility, it is a very delicate mineral. ## Colors and Varieties Iquiqueite occurs in a uniform, pale yellow color. No color varieties or commercial varieties are known. ## History and Name The mineral's name comes from the Iquique Province in the Tarapacá Region of Chile, where its only known occurrence (type locality) is located – Pintados. It was described and recognized as a new mineral species in 1997. ## Uses Iquiqueite has no industrial application. Its significance is purely scientific and collectible, being an object of desire for specialized collectors of rare minerals and microminerals.

## Identification A key diagnostic feature of iquiqueite is its locality – authentic specimens come exclusively from Pintados, Chile. It is distinguished by its pale yellow color and occurrence in the form of small, rhombohedral crystals. Definitive identification is only possible using advanced analytical methods, such as X-ray diffraction (XRD) or chemical microanalysis (EDS), which will confirm its unique composition with potassium, sodium, magnesium, chromium, and boron. ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals It can be confused with other secondary, yellow minerals found in evaporitic environments, such as some sulfates or other borates. However, the unique combination of elements (especially the presence of chromium) and the characteristic crystallographic form allow it to be distinguished after appropriate research. ## Crystal Forms It forms small, equally developed (equipotential) rhombohedral crystals, often with sharp edges and smooth faces. It occurs as single crystals or small groups grown on a substrate.

## Genesis Iquiqueite is a secondary mineral that forms in extremely arid conditions. Its genesis is associated with evaporation processes within salt crusts in desert areas, such as salars (salt flats) in the Atacama Desert. ## Mineral Associations It co-occurs with other evaporite minerals typical of this environment. It is most often found in association with halite and ulexite. ## Localities The only confirmed and described locality of iquiqueite in the world is its type locality: Pintados, Pampa del Tamarugal, in the Iquique Province (Tarapacá Region) in Chile.

## Quality Criteria The collectible value of iquiqueite stems almost exclusively from its extreme rarity. Specimens are usually microscopic, so the main quality criterion is the presence of a well-formed, sharp crystal with distinct color and luster. Specimens where the crystal is isolated and aesthetically set on a contrasting matrix may be more highly valued. Due to the nature of the mineral, size is of secondary importance – the mere presence of a confirmed specimen in a collection is what matters. ## Popular Localities The only source of collectible specimens is the Pintados locality in Chile. Any specimen offered from another locality should be treated with the utmost caution and requires analytical verification.
Care and storage
## Cleaning Iquiqueite is water-soluble, so **it must absolutely not be wet cleaned**. Any contact with water or moisture can irreversibly damage or destroy the specimen. For dust removal, only compressed air (from a safe distance) or a very soft, dry brush should be used. ## What to Avoid Avoid contact with water, water vapor, and high humidity. The mineral is sensitive to chemicals, especially acids. Due to its unknown but probably low hardness, it is susceptible to scratches and mechanical damage. ## Storage Iquiqueite specimens must be stored in a dry place, preferably in a sealed, closable "perky box". It is advisable to place a desiccant (e.g., silica gel) nearby. It should be protected from dust and sudden temperature changes.
