Intersilite is a very rare sodium, manganese, and titanium silicate, forming thin-tabular, colorless or pale yellow crystals.

Description

## Characteristics Intersilite is a complex layered silicate, belonging to a group of rare minerals. It forms characteristic, very thin, tabular or bladed crystals, which often arrange into radial aggregates, fans, or sheaf-like forms. Specimens are usually small, rarely exceeding a few millimeters. The mineral is colorless, white, or has a pale yellow hue. The luster on crystal surfaces is vitreous, while on cleavage planes it becomes distinctly pearly. ## Physical Properties The Mohs hardness of intersilite is approximately 4, making it a relatively soft mineral susceptible to scratching. Its density is about 2.63 g/cm³. It is transparent to translucent. The most characteristic physical feature is its perfect, unidirectional cleavage, which allows for easy separation of thin, inelastic plates. ## Colors and Varieties This mineral occurs in a limited color range: it is colorless, white, or pale yellow. No colored or commercial varieties have been distinguished. ## History and Name The name "intersilite" refers to its crystal structure – it comes from the Latin word *inter* meaning "between" and "sil" from "silicon," describing its position as a layered silicate. The mineral was approved by the International Mineralogical Association (IMA) in 1995. It was discovered and described in the Khibiny Massif on the Kola Peninsula in Russia. ## Uses Intersilite has no industrial application. Its significance is purely scientific and collectible due to its rarity and interesting structure.

Diagnostic features

## Identification Key features for identifying intersilite are its habit in the form of thin tablets, often in radial aggregates, and perfect cleavage with a pearly luster on separation planes. Low hardness (approx. 4) is also helpful. Certain identification is possible through analysis of its specific occurrence environment – in paragenesis with other rare minerals of alkaline pegmatites. ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals Intersilite can be confused with micas (e.g., muscovite), however, intersilite plates are brittle and inelastic, unlike the flexible and elastic lamellae of micas. It can also be confused with other rare layered silicates from Khibiny, such as shafranovskite or zakharovite. Final distinction from these minerals often requires advanced analytical methods, such as X-ray diffraction (XRD) or chemical microanalysis (EDS). ## Crystal Forms Crystals are thin-tabular, bladed, or platy. They usually occur as radial or sheaf-like aggregates and rosettes. Single, well-formed crystals are rare.

Geological environment

## Genesis Intersilite is a hydrothermal mineral. It forms in the late stages of crystallization in highly differentiated, peralkaline (hyperagpaitic) pegmatites associated with nepheline syenite massifs. ## Mineral Associations This mineral coexists with a rich assemblage of minerals typical of the Khibiny massif pegmatites. Its most common associations include: microcline, nepheline, aegirine, lorenzenite, eudialyte, lamprophyllite, enigmatite, astrophyllite, pekovite, and natrosilite. ## Localities It is an extremely rare mineral, and its occurrence has been confirmed in only a few places worldwide. The type locality, which is also the main source of specimens, is the Khibiny Massif on the Kola Peninsula in Russia, particularly deposits on Mount Koashva and Yukspor.

## Quality Criteria The collector's value of intersilite is determined by several factors. Most prized are specimens with well-formed, sharp crystals forming aesthetic rosettes or fan-like aggregates. The size of the crystals and aggregates, as well as their transparency and lack of mechanical damage, are also important. Specimens on matrix, especially in association with color-contrasting minerals (e.g., dark green aegirine), are particularly sought after. ## Popular Localities The only source of valuable collector's specimens of intersilite is its type locality – the Khibiny Massif on the Kola Peninsula in Russia. Specimens from this region are considered the best in the world.

Care and storage

## Cleaning Intersilite specimens are very delicate and should be cleaned with utmost care. It is recommended to use a soft brush to remove dust dry. If necessary, compressed air can be used from a safe distance. If wet cleaning is required, only distilled water should be used, and prolonged soaking should be avoided. Ultrasonic cleaning is absolutely not recommended. ## What to Avoid The mineral is soft and has perfect cleavage, so it should be protected from impacts, falls, and contact with harder minerals. All acids and strong detergents, which can damage its surface, should be avoided. It should not be exposed to high temperatures. ## Storage The safest way to store intersilite is to place it in a separate, padded collector's box, away from other minerals that could scratch it. Protect from dust and moisture.
