It differs from quartz by its lower hardness and different crystal habit. From beryl, to which it is closely related chemically, it differs in crystallographic system (monoclinic for hurlbutite, hexagonal for beryl) and often a more complex crystal habit. ## Crystal Forms Hurlbutite crystallizes in the monoclinic system. It forms short, prismatic crystals with a square or rectangular cross-section. Twinning often occurs, giving the crystals a more complex, pseudo-orthorhombic appearance. It also occurs in granular aggregates.

## Genesis Hurlbutite is a mineral of magmatic origin, crystallizing in the late stages from post-magmatic solutions rich in rare elements. It forms in granitic pegmatites, especially those with high phosphorus and beryllium content. ## Mineral Associations This mineral often co-occurs with other pegmatite minerals, such as albite, quartz, muscovite, beryl, apatite, brazilianite, herderite, eosphorite, and rare phosphates, e.g., from the triphylite group. ## Localities The most important and classic locality for hurlbutite is the Smith Mine in New Hampshire, USA. It is also known from other pegmatites in the USA (e.g., in Maine and Connecticut). Outside the United States, its occurrence has been reported in Brazil (famous pegmatites in Minas Gerais state), Finland, Russia (Kola Peninsula), and Pakistan.

## Quality Criteria The most sought-after specimens by collectors are those with sharp, well-formed, and transparent crystals, preferably set on a contrasting rock matrix. Larger sizes of individual crystals and interesting twinning are also valued. Specimens from the classic locality (Smith Mine, New Hampshire) have particular historical value. ## Popular Localities The most prized specimens come from the type locality in New Hampshire, USA. High-quality crystals, often in association with brazilianite, are also found in pegmatites in Minas Gerais, Brazil.
Care and storage
## Cleaning Hurlbutite specimens can be cleaned using a soft brush and distilled water. Ultrasonic cleaners should be avoided, as they can damage crystals, especially if they are fractured or intergrown with a delicate rock matrix. ## What to Avoid As a beryllium-containing mineral, hurlbutite dust is toxic if inhaled, and it should not be heated or mechanically processed without appropriate protective measures. Contact with strong acids, which can damage it, should be avoided. It is not sensitive to light, but extreme temperature changes should be avoided. ## Storage Specimens should be stored in separate boxes or on stands to prevent scratching by harder minerals.
