Honessite is a rare, hydrated nickel and iron sulfate, forming characteristic yellow-green coatings and crusts on other minerals.

Description

## Characteristics Honessite is a secondary mineral belonging to the hydrotalcite supergroup. It most commonly occurs as thin coatings, efflorescences, and crusts with a waxy or earthy appearance. Rarely, it forms tiny, hexagonal crystals visible under magnification. Its typical feature is an intense, yellow to yellow-green color, which distinguishes it from the host rock. ## Physical Properties This mineral is very soft and delicate. It is characterized by a waxy luster, sometimes transitioning to pearly on cleavage surfaces. It is translucent. Its calculated density is approximately 3.0-3.1 g/cm³, but due to its mode of occurrence, measuring it is practically impossible. ## Colors and Varieties Honessite exhibits colors ranging from pale yellow, through golden yellow, to greenish yellow. No distinct color varieties or commercial varieties are recognized. Variability in chemical composition, especially the nickel to iron ratio, can slightly affect the hue. ## History and Name The mineral is named in honor of Arthur Pharaoh Honess (1887-1942), a professor of mineralogy at Pennsylvania State University in the USA. It was first described in 1956 by V. T. Allen and J. J. Fahey based on specimens found in Linden, Wisconsin, USA. ## Uses Honessite has no industrial applications. It is solely an object of scientific interest and is valued by collectors of rare minerals.

Diagnostic features

## Identification Characteristic features of honessite include its yellow-green color, waxy luster, and mode of occurrence as coatings and crusts. Its very low hardness and paragenesis – occurring as an oxidation product of nickel sulfides, primarily millerite – are key. ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals Honessite can be confused with other secondary minerals of similar color and form, such as zaccagnaite (zinc analogue) or other members of the reevesite group. Definitive differentiation of these minerals is usually impossible without advanced analytical techniques, such as chemical composition analysis (EDS) or X-ray diffraction (XRD). ## Crystal Forms It is most commonly found in the form of earthy, waxy, or leathery coatings and crusts. It also forms very fine-grained aggregates. Microscopic, hexagonal tabular crystals, grouped in rosette-like aggregates, are rarely observed.

Geological environment

## Genesis Honessite is a secondary mineral, formed in the oxidation (weathering) zone of sulfide deposits. It forms as a result of the alteration of nickel-rich sulfides, primarily millerite (NiS), in the presence of iron minerals and sulfates, most often within carbonate rocks such as limestones and dolomites. ## Mineral Associations This mineral typically co-occurs with millerite (as its alteration product), gypsum, morenosite, retgersite, goethite, and other nickel and iron sulfates. ## Localities The most important honessite localities worldwide include the historical type locality in Linden (Wisconsin, USA) and the Gap nickel mine in Lancaster County (Pennsylvania, USA). It is also known from Halls Gap in Kentucky (USA), from several locations in Western Australia (e.g., Kambalda, Widgiemooltha), and from ancient mines in the Lavrion district in Greece.

## Quality Criteria The collector appeal of honessite specimens depends on several factors. Samples with a rich, thick, and intensely colored mineral coating are most highly valued. An additional advantage is a contrasting rock matrix and the presence of well-preserved associated minerals, especially shiny, acicular millerite crystals. ## Popular Localities Specimens from historical localities in the United States, namely Wisconsin and Pennsylvania, are considered classic and most sought after by collectors. They provide rich samples of historical significance for this mineral.

Care and storage

## Cleaning Honessite specimens are very delicate and should be handled with care. For dust removal, it is best to use a soft brush or a photographic air blower. Wet cleaning should be avoided. If necessary, a very quick wipe with a cotton swab moistened with distilled water, followed by immediate drying, is permissible. ## What to Avoid This mineral is sensitive to chemicals, especially acids, in which it readily dissolves. Ultrasonic cleaners, high temperatures, and prolonged contact with water, which can lead to its chemical degradation, should be avoided. Storage in a humid environment can harm it. ## Storage It is recommended to store specimens in a dry place, preferably in closed, padded boxes or display cases, to protect them from mechanical damage, dust, and humidity changes. It should be isolated from harder minerals that could scratch it.
