Honeaite is an extremely rare gold and thallium telluride, known from only one locality worldwide, forming microscopic inclusions in other minerals.
Description
## Characteristics Honeaite is a mineral known exclusively as microscopic, irregular grains, usually not exceeding 100 micrometers in size. It occurs as inclusions in other, more common tellurides, mainly altaite. Due to its nature, it does not form macroscopic specimens or crystals visible to the naked eye. Under reflected light microscopy, it has a creamy white or pale yellow color and a metallic luster. ## Physical Properties As an opaque mineral, it exhibits a strong, metallic luster. Its hardness is estimated at approximately 3.5 on the Mohs scale, which is typical for many tellurides. The density is very high, 12.98 g/cm³ (calculated value), due to the presence of heavy elements: gold, thallium, and tellurium. ## Colors and Varieties The mineral is uniform in color, which appears creamy white to pale yellow in polished sections. No varieties have been distinguished. ## History and Name Honeaite was first described in 1993. Its name honors Russell M. Honea (1929–1983), an American mineralogist from the University of Colorado, who made significant contributions to the study of telluride minerals. The type locality (the only known) is the Cripple Creek mining district in Teller County, Colorado, USA. ## Applications Due to its extreme rarity and microscopic size, honeaite has no practical applications. It is solely an object of scientific interest and a collector's item for specialized micromineral collectors.

## Identification Identification of honeaite is impossible without advanced analytical techniques. It cannot be recognized visually or by basic tests. Chemical analysis using an electron microprobe (EPMA) is crucial, as it confirms its unique composition – the simultaneous presence of gold (Au), thallium (Tl), and tellurium (Te) in appropriate proportions. Confirmation of the crystal structure requires X-ray diffraction (XRD) studies. ## Differentiation from similar minerals Under the microscope, honeaite can be confused with many other gold, silver, and lead tellurides, such as altaite, calaverite, krennerite, sylvanite, or petzite, with which it often co-occurs. The only feature allowing its differentiation is the analytically determined significant thallium content, an element rarely found in this group of minerals. ## Crystal forms This mineral forms exclusively anhedral (irregular, without developed faces) or subhedral (partially developed) grains and aggregates, most often as inclusions in other minerals.
Geological environment
## Genesis Honeaite forms in the final stages of crystallization in low-sulfidation, epithermal hydrothermal deposits rich in gold and tellurium. Its presence indicates specific geochemical conditions where, in addition to high tellurium activity, a local concentration of thallium must also have occurred. ## Mineral associations This mineral occurs in close association with other tellurides. At the type locality, it was found in association with altaite (PbTe), calaverite (AuTe₂), petzite (Ag₃AuTe₂), sylvanite ((Ag,Au)Te₂), hessite (Ag₂Te), and native gold (Au). ## Localities The only confirmed occurrence of honeaite worldwide is the historic Cripple Creek mining district in Colorado, USA. It is a "type-locality only" mineral.

## Quality criteria For such a rare micromineral as honeaite, traditional aesthetic criteria do not apply. The collector's value of a specimen primarily depends on the confirmation of the mineral's identity through chemical analysis. Samples in which honeaite grains are relatively "large" (several tens of micrometers) and clearly visible against the matrix are highly valued. The quality and abundance of associated minerals on the same specimen are also of great importance. ## Popular localities All known specimens come from a single locality worldwide: Cripple Creek, Colorado, USA. They appear on the collector's market extremely rarely, usually in circulation among specialized micromineral collectors or scientific institutions.
Care and storage
## Cleaning Specimens containing honeaite are practically not cleaned. The mineral occurs as microscopic inclusions within other minerals (mainly tellurides), which are themselves very delicate. The only permissible form of conservation is careful dust removal using a soft brush or a stream of compressed air from a safe distance. ## What to avoid Contact with any liquid, including water and chemicals, should be strictly avoided. Ultrasonic cleaners, temperature changes, and any attempts at mechanical cleaning can irreversibly damage not only the honeaite inclusions themselves but also the entire delicate host specimen. ## Storage Specimens with honeaite should be stored under stable room conditions, away from dust, moisture, and chemical fumes. The safest method is to place the sample in a sealed "micromount" box, with a precise label indicating the presence of this rare mineral.
