Herzenbergite is a rare tin sulfide, occurring as thin, lead-gray lamellae and flexible plates.

## Characteristics Herzenbergite is a tin(II) sulfide and belongs to the group of rare minerals. It typically forms very small, thin, lamellar or platy crystals that exhibit some flexibility. It occurs as fine aggregates, coatings, or individual, dispersed plates. Its appearance is inconspicuous, with a metallic luster on fresh surfaces, which, however, quickly tarnishes upon exposure to air. ## Physical Properties This mineral is very soft, with a Mohs hardness of approximately 2. No distinct color varieties or commercial forms are recognized. ## History and Name The mineral's name honors Robert Herzenberg (1885–1955), a German mining engineer and chemist, who was the first to synthesize tin(II) sulfide and study its properties, and also conducted research on tin deposits in Bolivia. The mineral was first described in 1935 by Ramdohr. ## Uses Due to its rarity and small crystal size, herzenbergite has no industrial applications. It is solely an object of interest for collectors specializing in rare minerals and for scientists.

It is heavy relative to its volume. ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals It can be confused with graphite, molybdenite, or stannite. It differs from graphite by its higher density and lack of smudging. Molybdenite has a similar appearance but is slightly harder and often has a bluish tint. It is one of the late crystallization products in mineralization processes. ## Mineral Associations It often co-occurs with other sulfides and sulfosalts, such as stannite, pyrite, chalcopyrite, sphalerite, galena, cassiterite, teallite, franckeite, and quartz. ## Localities The most important and classic localities for this mineral are in Bolivia, especially in mines in the departments of Potosí (e.g., Maria Teresa mine, Veta Salvadora mine near Oruro) and Oruro. It is also found in small quantities in Germany (Thuringia), the Czech Republic, Russia (Far East), and Canada (New Brunswick).
