Hansblockite is a very rare copper, mercury, bismuth, and lead selenide, forming microscopic, metallic crystals in Tsumeb.

## Characteristics Hansblockite is a complex selenide with a metallic luster and a grayish-black color. It occurs as extremely small, anhedral grains or bladed crystals, rarely exceeding 50 micrometers in size. It typically forms small aggregates embedded in the host rock. Due to the microscopic size of its crystals, its visual features are only discernible under high magnification. ## Physical Properties The mineral is characterized by a strong metallic luster and is completely opaque. Its density, calculated based on its chemical composition and unit cell parameters, is 7.81 g/cm³. Its Mohs hardness has not yet been determined. ## Colors and Varieties Hansblockite is monochromatic – it occurs exclusively in shades of grayish-black steel. No colored or commercial varieties are known. ## History and Name The mineral was officially recognized by the International Mineralogical Association (IMA) in 2016. Its name honors Hans Block (born 1940), a German mineral collector from Cologne, known for his specialized collection of specimens from the Tsumeb mine in Namibia, which is also the type locality for hansblockite. ## Uses Due to its extreme rarity and microscopic size, hansblockite has no industrial applications. It is solely an object of scientific research and interest for specialized micromount mineral collectors.

## Identification Identification of hansblockite based on visual characteristics is impossible, even under a microscope. Advanced chemical analyses, such as X-ray microanalysis (EDS/WDS), are necessary to confirm its complex composition (presence of Cu, Hg, Bi, Pb, and Se). A key clue is its occurrence in paragenesis with other selenides in the Tsumeb mine. ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals Hansblockite can be confused with many other fine-grained, metallic minerals of gray or black color, such as clausthalite, galena, or other complex sulfides and selenides. Definitive differentiation is only possible based on chemical composition analysis. ## Crystal Forms The mineral forms anhedral (irregular) grains and elongated, bladed crystals, reaching a maximum of several tens of micrometers in length. They usually occur as small, tangled aggregates.

Geological environment

## Genesis Hansblockite is a hydrothermal mineral. It formed in the oxidation zone of a polymetallic deposit, in voids and fractures of dolomitic rocks. ## Mineral Associations This mineral occurs in direct association with other rare selenides. It is most commonly accompanied by clausthalite, umangite, and klockmannite. ## Localities The only confirmed locality for hansblockite worldwide is its type locality – the famous Tsumeb mine in the Oshikoto Region of Namibia.

## Quality Criteria For micromount minerals like hansblockite, the primary criterion for value is the certainty of specimen identification. The richness of the aggregates adds further value – the more microcrystals on the matrix, the more valuable the specimen. The size of individual crystals, even if measured in tens of micrometers, also increases the attractiveness of the specimen for specialists. ## Popular Localities The only source of hansblockite specimens is the Tsumeb mine in Namibia. Specimens from this locality are highly prized by collectors specializing in minerals from this mine or in mineral systematics.

Care and storage

## Cleaning Hansblockite specimens, as micromount minerals, are generally not subject to cleaning. Any attempts at mechanical or chemical cleaning will almost certainly destroy the delicate, microscopic crystals. If necessary, dust can be removed very carefully with a soft brush or a stream of compressed air from a safe distance. ## What to Avoid Contact with acids and other chemicals that can react violently with selenides must be strictly avoided. The mineral is brittle and sensitive to any mechanical damage (abrasion, impact). Store away from moisture to minimize the risk of oxidation. ## Storage The safest storage method is a sealed "micromount" box, which protects the specimen from dust, moisture, and physical damage. The specimen should not be exposed to direct sunlight or sudden temperature changes.
