It occurs as granular or columnar aggregates, rarely forming well-developed crystals. Its appearance is inconspicuous, and identification requires advanced research methods. ## Physical Properties This mineral is characterized by a hardness of 5.5-6.5 on the Mohs scale. It has a vitreous luster and is translucent to opaque. Its density is relatively high, which is typical for iron- and manganese-rich minerals. ## Colors and Varieties Halagurite ranges in color from dark green to black. No distinct color varieties or commercial forms are recognized. ## History and Name The mineral's name comes from its discovery locality – the Halaguru manganese deposit in the Mysore district, Karnataka state, India. It was first described and approved as a new mineral species in 2023 by the International Mineralogical Association (IMA). ## Uses Due to its rarity and occurrence only as microscopic grains, halagurite has no industrial applications. It is solely an object of scientific interest and a collector's item for specialized rare mineral collectors.

Identification requires advanced analytical techniques, such as X-ray microanalysis (EDS/WDS) to determine chemical composition and X-ray diffraction (XRD) to confirm crystal structure. Dark green to black color and occurrence in manganese rocks can be a preliminary indication. ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals Halagurite is visually indistinguishable from other dark pyroxenes, such as ferrosilite, hedenbergite, or augite, as well as some amphiboles. Definitive differentiation is possible only through detailed chemical and structural analysis. ## Crystal Forms This mineral forms anhedral (unformed) to subhedral (poorly formed) grains up to 200 micrometers in size, as well as aggregates of prismatic crystals up to 1 mm long.

Geological environment

## Genesis Halagurite forms under high-grade metamorphic conditions (amphibolite to granulite facies) in manganese- and iron-rich rocks. Its presence indicates specific pressure and temperature conditions and an appropriate chemical composition of the protolith. ## Mineral Associations This mineral co-occurs with other minerals typical of metamorphic manganese deposits, such as spessartine (manganese garnet), pyroxmangite, rhodonite, quartz, as well as other pyroxenes and amphiboles. ## Localities The only confirmed occurrence of halagurite worldwide is its type locality – the Halaguru manganese deposit in Karnataka state, India.

Material from this location is extremely difficult to acquire on the collector's market.

Care and storage

## Cleaning Halagurite specimens should only be cleaned with compressed air to remove dust. Due to its occurrence as fine grains within the host rock, any wet or mechanical cleaning that could damage delicate aggregates should be avoided. ## What to Avoid Avoid contact with chemicals, especially acids, which can react with the mineral's components.
