Gurimite is a rare barium vanadate, forming small, tabular crystals with a vitreous luster, found in the Hatrurim Formation in Israel.

## Characteristics Gurimite is a mineral from the vanadate group, chemically defined as barium vanadate. It occurs as very small, tabular or platy crystals, reaching sizes up to 0.2 mm. These crystals are transparent and colorless, often forming aggregates or rosettes. Due to their small size, its visual features are difficult to observe without magnification. ## Physical Properties Gurimite crystals exhibit a vitreous luster. This mineral is brittle. Its Mohs hardness is approximately 3, and its density calculated from the formula and unit cell parameters is 5.21 g/cm³. ## Colors and Varieties Gurimite is colorless. No colored or commercial varieties have been distinguished. ## History and Name The mineral's name comes from the Hebrew word "gurim" (גורים), meaning "young lions" or "lion cubs." It refers to the biblical phrase "lion's den," which is the ancient name of the area where the discovery was made. Gurimite was approved as a new mineral by the International Mineralogical Association (IMA) in 2013 (IMA2013-038). It was described by Evgeny V. Galuskin and co-workers. ## Uses Gurimite has no industrial significance. Its occurrence is limited to microscopic specimens, making it solely an object of scientific interest and for specialized micromineral collectors.

Diagnostic features

## Identification Identification of gurimite is possible only using advanced analytical methods, such as Raman spectroscopy or chemical analysis with an electron microprobe (EDS/WDS). Visual identification in the field or even in a collection is impossible due to the microscopic size of the crystals and their similarity to other colorless minerals. ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals Gurimite can be confused with other colorless, fine-grained minerals found in the Hatrurim Formation, such as calcite, aragonite, or other rare vanadates. Certain distinction requires specialized research equipment. ## Crystal Forms Gurimite forms thin, tabular crystals with a hexagonal outline, often elongated and platy. These crystals can occur individually or form aggregates, including radial or fan-shaped clusters resembling rosettes.

Geological environment

## Genesis Gurimite forms as a result of pyrometamorphic processes occurring in rocks of the Hatrurim Formation (the so-called "Mottled Zone"). It is a product of high-temperature reactions within limestones and marls under the influence of natural combustion of bituminous substances contained within them. It crystallizes in small voids and fractures within the parent rocks. ## Mineral Associations This mineral co-occurs with other rare minerals typical of the Hatrurim Formation, such as larnite, brownmillerite, mayenite, as well as with calcite, aragonite, hematite, magnetite, barite, and other vanadates, e.g., barite, palenzonite-(Ba), and gurimite-like phases. ## Localities The only confirmed locality of gurimite worldwide (type locality) is the Hatrurim Formation near Gurim Mountain in the Judaean Desert, Israel.

## Quality Criteria The quality of gurimite specimens is assessed based on the size and development of microscopic crystals and the richness of their occurrence on the rock matrix. The most desirable specimens are those with clearly formed, sharp crystals forming aesthetic aggregates, well isolated from other minerals. Due to the microscopic nature of the mineral, the quality of photomicrography is also crucial. ## Popular Localities The only source of specimens is the type locality in the Hatrurim Formation in Israel. Material from this location is extremely rare on the collector's market.

Care and storage

## Cleaning Gurimite specimens, due to their microscopic size and fragility, should not be mechanically cleaned. Any contaminants should be removed very carefully, preferably with compressed air from a safe distance. Avoid contact with water and chemicals. ## What to Avoid Avoid contact with acids and other aggressive chemicals. The mineral is brittle, so it should be protected from impacts, vibrations, and sudden temperature changes. ## Storage Gurimite specimens should be stored in stable conditions, in specialized "micromount" boxes that protect them from mechanical damage and dust. Avoid exposure to moisture.
