Giuşcăite is a very rare, lead-gray sulfosalt mineral, occurring as small, metallic aggregates.

## Characteristics Giuşcăite is a complex sulfosalt containing lead, thallium, silver, arsenic, and antimony. It forms submillimeter, anhedral (lacking crystal faces) grains that occur as inclusions in other minerals, primarily in sphalerite. It is usually observed as aggregates with a metallic luster and a lead-gray color. ## Physical Properties This mineral is characterized by a metallic luster and is opaque. Its Mohs hardness is 3.5, and its density, calculated based on the chemical formula and unit cell parameters, is 5.45 g/cm³. In reflected light, its color is white with a slight creamy tint. ## History and Name The mineral's name honors the Romanian geologist and mineralogist, Professor Radu Giuşcă (1904–1983), in recognition of his contributions to the study of mineral deposits in Romania. Giuşcăite was approved as a new mineral species by the International Mineralogical Association (IMA) in 2022 (IMA2022-094). It was discovered in material from the Lengenbach deposit in the Binn Valley (Binntal), Switzerland.

## Identification Identification of giuşcăite is only possible using advanced laboratory methods, such as chemical composition analysis (EDS/WDS) with an electron microscope and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Visually, it is indistinguishable from many other sulfosalts with a similar appearance – it has a lead-gray color and metallic luster. It occurs as fine inclusions in sphalerite. ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals It can be confused with other sulfosalts from Lengenbach, such as hutchinsonite, wallisite, imhofite, or bernardite. Definitive differentiation requires specialized chemical and structural analysis, as all these minerals form similar, small, metallic aggregates. ## Crystal Forms This mineral has only been observed as anhedral (xenomorphic) grains, not exceeding 200 micrometers in size, forming aggregates.

Geological environment

## Genesis Giuşcăite forms as a result of hydrothermal processes in metal deposits. In its type locality (Lengenbach), it crystallizes in Triassic dolomitic rocks that have undergone metamorphism under amphibolite facies conditions. The mineralization is associated with solutions rich in sulfur, arsenic, thallium, and lead. ## Mineral Associations In the Lengenbach deposit, giuşcăite occurs in paragenesis with minerals such as sphalerite (in which it forms inclusions), realgar, hutchinsonite, imhofite, wallisite, bernardite, and tennantite-(Zn). ## Localities The only confirmed locality for giuşcăite worldwide is the Lengenbach quarry in the Binn Valley (Binntal), Valais canton, Switzerland. This is the type locality for this mineral.

## Quality Criteria As a mineral of purely scientific and systematic importance, giuşcăite is not subject to classic quality assessment criteria. The collector's value of a specimen depends on the analytical confirmation of the mineral's presence and the richness of its association with other rare sulfosalts from Lengenbach. Any specimen with analytically confirmed giuşcăite is extremely valuable to specialized collectors of systematic and "micromount" minerals.

Care and storage

## Cleaning Due to its extreme rarity and small grain size, giuşcăite specimens are practically not subject to cleaning. Any attempts at mechanical or chemical cleaning may damage the mineral or the host rock. If necessary, compressed air can be used to remove dust. ## What to Avoid Avoid contact with chemicals, acids, and detergents. The mineral is sensitive to oxidation, so it should be protected from moisture and sudden temperature changes. It should not be heated or exposed to ultrasound. ## Storage Giuşcăite specimens should be stored under stable conditions, preferably in closed, padded "micromount" boxes that protect against dust, moisture, and mechanical damage. Storage in a dry environment is crucial for maintaining the mineral's stability.
