Diagnostic features
## Identification The most important diagnostic feature of gilaite is its form of occurrence as small, perfectly spherical aggregates (spherulites). Its vibrant blue-green color is also characteristic. The fibrous structure of these spheres is often visible under magnification. ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals Gilaite is sometimes confused with chrysocolla, which, however, rarely forms such regular spherulites and more often occurs in reniform or botryoidal forms with a slightly different hue. It may also resemble rosasite or aurichalcite, which, however, usually have a lighter color and often a silky luster, and also react with hydrochloric acid. ## Crystal Forms Gilaite crystallizes in the monoclinic system, but its individual crystals are microscopic and take the form of needles or fibers. These tiny crystals almost always form radial-fibrous aggregates with a spherical shape.
Geological environment
## Genesis Gilaite is a secondary copper mineral, forming in the oxidation (weathering) zones of copper ore deposits. It forms as a result of the action of silica-rich solutions on other, previously formed copper minerals in a low-temperature and low-pressure environment. ## Mineral Associations It often co-occurs with other secondary copper minerals, such as chrysocolla, dioptase, malachite, as well as with quartz, calcite, and iron oxides. ## Localities The most important gilaite localities are in the USA, primarily at its discovery site – the Christmas Mine in Arizona. It is also known from the Ajo region in Arizona. Exceptionally prized specimens come from Brazil (near São Geraldo do Baixio, Minas Gerais), where gilaite forms spectacular inclusions in transparent quartz crystals.

## Quality Criteria The most highly valued specimens are those with well-formed, clearly separated spherical aggregates of intense, uniform color. A contrasting, light rock matrix enhances attractiveness. In the case of "Medusa Quartz," the value is determined by the ideal transparency and clarity of the quartz crystal and the aesthetic arrangement and distinctness of the gilaite inclusions. ## Popular Localities For collectors seeking classic, spherulitic specimens on matrix, those from Arizona (USA) are most desirable. Specimens with inclusions in quartz, sought after by both collectors and in the jewelry market, come almost exclusively from Brazil.
Care and storage
## Cleaning Gilaite specimens should be cleaned very carefully, using a soft brush and distilled water. Strong rubbing, which could damage the delicate, fibrous aggregates, should be avoided. Ultrasonic cleaners and mechanical cleaning tools are absolutely not recommended. ## What to Avoid Gilaite is a soft mineral, susceptible to scratching by harder minerals (e.g., quartz). As a hydrated mineral, it can be sensitive to high temperatures, which risk its dehydration and consequently a change in color and structure. Contact with acids and other strong chemicals should be avoided. ## Storage Collector's specimens of gilaite are best stored in separate, padded boxes or display cases to prevent abrasions and scratches. They should be protected from dust, direct sunlight, and sudden temperature changes.
