Diagnostic features
## Identification Identification of geversite in field conditions is practically impossible. In a collection, it can be suspected based on its very high density, metallic luster, steel-gray color, and most importantly, its co-occurrence with other platinum group minerals in samples from known localities (e.g., Bushveld Complex, Sudbury). ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals Geversite is visually almost identical to many other metallic, gray minerals, such as sperrylite, cobaltite, gersdorffite, and other sulfides and arsenides. Certain differentiation requires advanced analytical methods, such as chemical composition analysis (EDS) or X-ray diffraction (XRD). ## Crystal Forms Geversite crystals are extremely rare. If they occur, they take simple forms of the isometric system, such as cubes or octahedra, but they reach microscopic sizes. Typically, it forms anhedral (irregular, lacking their own faces) grains smaller than one millimeter.
Geological environment
## Genesis Geversite crystallizes in the late stages of magmatic processes within large, differentiated mafic and ultramafic intrusions. It is a product of the segregation of sulfides and metals from the silicate melt. It can also occur in hydrothermal deposits associated with such intrusions and, due to its chemical resistance and hardness, in secondary placer deposits. ## Mineral Associations This mineral occurs in association with other platinum group minerals (PGM) and sulfides. Its most common associations include: sperrylite, braggite, cooperite, laurite, native platinum, as well as pyrrhotite, pentlandite, and chalcopyrite. ## Localities The most important and well-known occurrences of geversite worldwide are associated with large platinum group element mining areas. These include primarily the Bushveld Igneous Complex in South Africa, the Sudbury region in Ontario (Canada), the Norilsk area in Siberia (Russia), and the Stillwater Complex in Montana (USA).

## Quality Criteria The quality of a geversite specimen is assessed mainly from a scientific and micromount collecting perspective. Samples with well-formed, even microscopic, crystals are most desirable. Specimens where geversite forms rich associations with other rare platinum group minerals, and its identification has been analytically confirmed, are also highly valued. ## Popular Localities The vast majority of specimens available to collectors come from the main platinum group element mining regions, such as the Bushveld Complex in South Africa (especially from mines around Rustenburg) and the Sudbury Basin in Canada.
Care and storage
## Cleaning Geversite specimens, most often as embedded grains, should be cleaned very carefully. It is recommended to use a soft brush to remove dust. If necessary, distilled water can be used, and then the specimen should be immediately and thoroughly dried. ## What to Avoid Avoid contact of the mineral with acids and other aggressive chemicals, which can damage its surface. Geversite is relatively hard, but it should be protected from contact with harder minerals to avoid scratches. ## Storage Store in a dry place, preferably in a closed "micromount" box, to protect it from dust and mechanical damage. A label with the exact locality is crucial, as the scientific value of such specimens is closely related to it.
