Description
## Characteristics Gersdorffite is a nickel arsenosulfide (NiAsS), belonging to the cobaltite group. It most commonly forms well-developed isometric crystals, as well as granular, disseminated, or massive aggregates. Typical specimens have a steel-gray or silvery-white color and a strong, metallic luster. In air, its surface may tarnish and become covered with a gray or black film. ## Physical Properties This mineral is brittle and opaque. Its Mohs hardness is 5.5, placing it in the same class as apatite or glass. It is characterized by high density, ranging from 5.9 to over 6.3 g/cm³, which makes specimens noticeably heavy for their size. It exhibits good cleavage in three mutually perpendicular directions. ## Colors and Varieties The primary color of gersdorffite is steel-gray, transitioning to silvery-white. Due to oxidation, the surface often becomes dull, gray, or blackish. Its structure may contain impurities of other elements, mainly cobalt and iron, and less commonly antimony. A cobalt-rich variety is sometimes called corynite. ## History and Name The mineral's name, given in 1845 by the Austrian mineralogist Alexander Löwe, commemorates the von Gersdorff family, former owners of the nickel mine in Schladming, Styria (Austria), where the mineral was first identified. This is its type locality. ## Uses Gersdorffite, when found in larger concentrations, can be a minor source of nickel. However, its main significance is scientific and as a collector's item.

## Identification Characteristic features of gersdorffite include its steel-gray color, strong metallic luster, high density, and isometric, cubic crystal forms. The streak is grayish-black. It is brittle. ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals It is practically impossible to distinguish from the very similar cobaltite (CoAsS) without chemical analysis; however, cobaltite is more often silvery-white with a pinkish tint. It is distinguished from pyrite (FeS₂) by its color (pyrite is brass-yellow) and slightly higher hardness. Skutterudite ((Co,Ni)As₃) has a similar appearance but usually forms different crystal habits and does not contain sulfur. Ullmannite (NiSbS) is its antimony analogue and also requires advanced analysis for certain identification. ## Crystal Forms Gersdorffite crystallizes in the isometric system, most commonly forming cubes, octahedra, and pentagonal dodecahedra (pyritohedra). Crystals may have striated face surfaces. It also occurs as granular, radial, or massive aggregates.
Geological environment
## Genesis Gersdorffite is a hydrothermal mineral. It forms under moderate temperature conditions in ore veins, often associated with magmatic intrusions. ## Mineral Associations It most commonly co-occurs with other nickel and cobalt arsenides and sulfides, such as niccolite, cobaltite, ullmannite, maucherite, skutterudite, and rammelsbergite. It is also accompanied by gangue minerals like siderite, dolomite, barite, calcite, and quartz. ## Localities Key global localities include historical sites in Austria (Schladming in Styria) and Germany (Harz Mountains; Siegerland). Beautiful crystals come from the Sudbury and Cobalt regions in Ontario (Canada) and from the Bou Azzer district in Morocco. It also occurs in many other places worldwide, though less frequently in the form of well-developed specimens.

## Quality Criteria The most highly valued by collectors are specimens with sharp, fully developed crystals exhibiting a mirror-like, metallic luster. Large, single cubes or octahedra, as well as aesthetic groups of crystals on matrix, are particularly sought after. Specimens from classic, historical European localities have additional value. ## Popular Localities Specimens from Germany (e.g., St. Andreasberg in the Harz Mountains) and Austria (Schladming) are considered classic. Large and well-formed crystals, often with complex habits, have been found in Canada (Sudbury) and in the famous cobalt-nickel deposit of Bou Azzer in Morocco.
Care and storage
## Cleaning It is recommended to clean specimens only dry, using a soft brush to remove dust. Avoid contact with water, which can accelerate oxidation and surface tarnishing. ## What to Avoid The mineral contains arsenic, making it toxic. After each contact with a specimen, hands should be thoroughly washed. Inhaling dust generated during processing or cleaning should be avoided. It should be protected from moisture, high temperatures, and all chemicals, especially acids, which can damage it. ## Storage Gersdorffite specimens are best stored in a dry place, in closed, padded boxes or display cases, to limit access to moisture and air, which will slow down the tarnishing process. Keep out of reach of children and pets.
