Georgbarsanovite is a rare mineral from the eudialyte group, characterized by a complex chemical composition and occurrence in alkaline pegmatites of the Kola Peninsula.

Description

## Characteristics Georgbarsanovite is a complex cyclosilicate belonging to the eudialyte group. It most often occurs as irregular grains embedded in rock or poorly formed crystals. Its typical appearance is not spectacular – it forms massive aggregates of brownish-red, pinkish-red, or brown color. Distinct crystal faces are rarely observed. ## Physical Properties This mineral is characterized by a hardness ranging from 5-5.5 on the Mohs scale, making it relatively resistant to scratching. It has a vitreous luster and is transparent to translucent in thin fragments. It does not exhibit cleavage, and its fracture is conchoidal. The density is approximately 2.95 g/cm³. ## Colors and Varieties The predominant colors are brownish-red and pinkish-red hues. Color is one of the visual characteristics, but it is not sufficient for certain identification without chemical analysis. No named color varieties or commercial varieties are distinguished. ## History and Name Georgbarsanovite was first described in 1986 by A.P. Khomyakov, E.I. Semenov, and A.V. Bykova. The mineral is named in honor of Georgy Pavlovich Barsanov (1907-1991), a Russian mineralogist and long-time director of the Fersman Mineralogical Museum in Moscow. Type specimens come from Mount Koashva in the Khibiny Massif on the Kola Peninsula, Russia. ## Uses Due to its rarity, georgbarsanovite has no industrial applications. It is solely an object of scientific interest and is valued by advanced collectors of rare and systematic minerals.

Diagnostic features

## Identification Field identification of georgbarsanovite is difficult and relies mainly on the geological context. Its occurrence in ultra-alkaline pegmatites of the Khibiny and Lovozero massifs is key. Brownish-red color and vitreous luster in association with minerals such as aegirine, nepheline, or lorenzenite can be an indication. ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals Visual distinction of georgbarsanovite from other red and brown minerals of the eudialyte group (e.g., eudialyte, kentbrooksite, raslakite) is practically impossible without advanced analytical methods, such as X-ray microanalysis (EDS/WDS). Eudialyte is usually more pink or bright red, but color is not a reliable criterion. ## Crystal Forms Georgbarsanovite crystallizes in the trigonal system. It is most commonly found as anhedral (irregular) or subhedral (partially formed) grains, forming aggregates in the host rock. Well-formed, isometric crystals are exceptionally rare.

Geological environment

## Genesis Georgbarsanovite is a mineral of late-hydrothermal and metasomatic origin. It forms in highly differentiated, peralkaline nepheline syenite pegmatites, which are characteristic of the Khibiny and Lovozero massifs on the Kola Peninsula. ## Mineral Associations This mineral co-occurs with a rich assemblage of other rare alkaline minerals. Its most common associations include eudialyte, aegirine, nepheline, microcline, lorenzenite, lomonosovite, villiaumite, lamprophyllite, and other minerals from the eudialyte group. ## Localities The most important and practically only significant localities of georgbarsanovite in the world are in Russia, on the Kola Peninsula. This mineral is found in the pegmatites of the Khibiny Massif (including Mount Koashva, Rasvumchorr) and the Lovozero Massif (including Mount Karnasurt, Kedykvyrpakhk).

The aesthetics of the host rock and the presence of well-formed crystals of associated minerals are also important. ## Popular Localities Specimens from the classic localities on the Kola Peninsula in Russia, especially from the pegmatites of Mount Koashva in the Khibiny Massif, which is the type locality for this mineral, are by far the most valued and sought after by collectors.

Care and storage

## Cleaning Georgbarsanovite specimens should be cleaned very carefully. The safest method is to use a soft brush to remove dust. For heavier dirt, distilled water can be used to gently wipe the surface. Ultrasonic cleaners should be avoided, as they can cause cracks. ## What to Avoid The mineral is sensitive to strong acids. Contact with household and laboratory chemicals should be avoided. Despite its moderate hardness, it should be protected from impacts and contact with harder minerals (e.g., quartz) to prevent scratching. It is stable in sunlight and normal temperature conditions. ## Storage Collector's specimens of georgbarsanovite are best stored in separate, padded boxes or in display cases, under stable room conditions. Isolation from other minerals prevents accidental mechanical damage.
