Description

## Characteristics Geigerite is a hydrated manganese arsenate, distinguished by its appearance. It most often forms fan-shaped or radial aggregates, resembling rosettes, composed of thin, bladed or platy crystals. Individual crystals are usually small, but their clusters can reach significant sizes, creating spectacular, three-dimensional forms on the host rock. ## Physical Properties This mineral is relatively soft, with a Mohs hardness of approximately 3. It is brittle and has perfect, unidirectional cleavage. The luster is vitreous, and on fracture surfaces, it can be close to silky. The density of geigerite is about 3.06 g/cm³. Thin splinters or small crystals are transparent to translucent. ## Colors and Varieties Geigerite occurs in a characteristic color range, from reddish-brown and brownish-red to pinkish-red. The intensity of the color depends on the specific chemical composition and crystal structure. There are no named commercial or color varieties. ## History and Name The mineral is named in honor of the Swiss mineral collector, Dr. Thomas Geiger (1925-1990) from Zermatt. It was formally described and approved as a new mineral species by the International Mineralogical Association (IMA) in 1989. It was discovered in the Falotta region of Switzerland. ## Uses Due to its rarity, attractive appearance, and delicacy, geigerite is a mineral of purely scientific and collector's interest. It has no industrial applications.

Diagnostic features

## Identification The key diagnostic feature of geigerite is its mode of occurrence – radial aggregates (rosettes) composed of bladed crystals. Its characteristic reddish-brown color, low hardness, and occurrence in paragenesis with other manganese minerals are also distinctive. ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals Geigerite can be confused with other reddish arsenates, such as erythrite, which, however, has a more carmine or purplish-red color and is a cobalt arsenate. Other similar manganese minerals, like brandtite, often occur with geigerite but differ in hue and crystal form. Accurate identification often requires chemical analysis. ## Crystal Forms Geigerite crystals are strongly flattened, bladed, or platy. They almost always occur in characteristic, radial or fan-shaped aggregates, forming spherical clusters and rosettes. Single, well-formed crystals are extremely rare.

Geological environment

## Genesis Geigerite is a secondary mineral. It forms in cracks and fissures of rocks within metamorphosed manganese ore deposits. Its crystallization occurs as a result of low-temperature hydrothermal processes or the weathering of primary manganese and arsenic minerals. ## Mineral Associations This mineral most often co-occurs with other arsenates and manganese minerals. Typical associated minerals include brandtite, caryinite, sarkinite, rhodochrosite, quartz, and barite. ## Localities The most important and classic locality, which is the type locality, is Falotta in the canton of Graubünden, Switzerland. High-quality specimens also come from the Valgraveglia mine in Liguria, Italy. Other known occurrences include Gonia in Greece and the Franklin deposit in New Jersey, USA.

## Quality Criteria The most prized geigerite specimens are those with well-formed, complete rosettes of an intense, reddish-brown color. The size of the aggregates and their aesthetic arrangement on a small, contrasting rock matrix are important. Specimens with minimal damage to delicate crystals fetch the highest prices. ## Popular Localities The Valgraveglia mine in Italy is considered the source of the world's best collector specimens, yielding large and spectacular rosettes. Classic specimens from the type locality (Falotta, Switzerland) are also highly sought after by collectors.

Care and storage

## Cleaning Geigerite specimens should only be dry-cleaned, using a soft brush to remove dust. Any contact with water should be avoided, as it can damage the mineral, especially its structure and luster. The use of ultrasonic cleaners and chemical cleaning agents is absolutely forbidden. ## What to Avoid Geigerite is sensitive to temperature changes and direct sunlight, which can lead to dehydration and, consequently, to changes in color and cracking. As an arsenate, it is potentially toxic – avoid inhaling dust and wash hands after contact with the mineral. Protect it from impacts and abrasions due to its low hardness and perfect cleavage. ## Storage It is recommended to store specimens in closed, padded boxes, under stable humidity and temperature conditions, away from light sources. It is best to display it in closed display cases to protect delicate crystals from mechanical damage and dust.
