Gatelite-(Ce) is a rare mineral from the epidote supergroup, characterized by a complex chemical composition with cerium and occurring as brown, radial aggregates.

## Characteristics Gatelite-(Ce) is a complex silicate belonging to the epidote supergroup and the dollaseite series. It forms elongated, prismatic crystals, most often occurring as radial or fan-shaped aggregates. Its typical appearance is clusters of acicular crystals, brown to reddish-brown in color, embedded in the host rock. Single, well-formed crystals are rarely found. ## Physical Properties This mineral has a hardness of 6.5-7 on the Mohs scale, making it relatively scratch-resistant. The luster is vitreous, transitioning to resinous on some surfaces. It is a translucent mineral, and in thicker sections, opaque. Its density is relatively high, approximately 4.16 g/cm³. ## Colors and Varieties Brown in various shades, from light brown to dark, reddish-brown, is dominant. No color varieties or commercial varieties are known. ## History and Name The mineral's name honors the French mineral collector Michel Gatel (born 1943), who found the first specimens. The "-(Ce)" suffix in the name (according to Levinson's classification) indicates the dominance of cerium among rare earth elements in its chemical composition. Gatelite-(Ce) was officially recognized as a new mineral species by the International Mineralogical Association (IMA) in 2001. The type locality is the Trimouns talc quarry in Luzenac, France. ## Applications Due to its rarity, gatelite-(Ce) has no industrial applications. It is solely an object of scientific interest and a valued acquisition for advanced systematic collections.

## Identification Characteristic features of gatelite-(Ce) include its brown color, radial habit of aggregates, and relatively high hardness. Its occurrence in a specific geological environment – in talc-chlorite schists – is also an important clue. However, final identification requires advanced analytical methods, such as X-ray microanalysis (EDS/WDS), due to its similarity to other minerals in its group. ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals Gatelite-(Ce) can be confused with other rare-earth-rich minerals from the epidote supergroup, such as allanite-(Ce) or other minerals from the dollaseite series. Allanite-(Ce) is typically black and more massive. In habit, it may resemble some tourmalines (e.g., dravite), which, however, have a different crystal cross-section (trigonal) and often exhibit stronger pleochroism. ## Crystal Forms Crystals are monoclinic, prismatic in habit, often strongly elongated and acicular. They almost always form aggregates with a radial, fan-shaped, or sheaf-like structure, radiating from a single crystallization center.

Geological environment

## Genesis Gatelite-(Ce) forms as a result of metamorphic or hydrothermal processes in a specific chemical environment. At the type locality (Trimouns), it occurs in voids within dolomite lenses, located within metamorphosed talc-chlorite schists. ## Mineral Associations This mineral co-occurs with talc, chlorite (clinochlore), dolomite, phlogopite, titanite, allanite-(Ce), and quartz. ## Localities The most important and globally known locality for gatelite-(Ce) is the Trimouns talc quarry, near Luzenac in the Ariège department, France. This is its type locality, from which the best specimens originate. It has also been reported in marbles in the Apuan Alps region of Italy.

## Quality Criteria The most highly valued gatelite-(Ce) specimens are those that exhibit well-defined, radial aggregates with an intense, brown color. Visual appeal is enhanced by contrast with a light host rock, such as white dolomite. The size of the aggregates and the absence of damage to the delicate, acicular crystals are also important. ## Popular Localities The only source of specimens of collector's significance is the Trimouns quarry in France. Specimens from this locality are the standard for this mineral and the most sought after by collectors.

Care and storage

## Cleaning Gatelite-(Ce) specimens can be cleaned with a soft brush and distilled water. Strong scrubbing should be avoided to prevent damage to the delicate, acicular crystals. Ultrasonic cleaners are not recommended, as they can cause crystals to fracture along cleavage planes. ## What to Avoid This mineral is sensitive to strong acids. It should be protected from sudden temperature changes and prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, although there are no reports of it fading. ## Storage It is recommended to store specimens in closed boxes or display cases to protect them from dust and mechanical damage. Due to the fragility of radial aggregates, avoid placing other minerals on them.
