## Characteristics Galenobismutite is a lead-bismuth sulfide belonging to the sulfosalt group. Its name refers to its chemical composition (containing lead - Latin *galena*) and bismuth, and its resemblance to galena. It forms elongated, prismatic or acicular crystals, often with longitudinal striations. It also occurs as radial, fibrous, or granular masses. It is opaque, with a color ranging from tin-white to silver-white, often with a dull, yellowish, or iridescent tarnish. ## Physical Properties This mineral is relatively soft, with a Mohs hardness of 2.5-3.5. It is quite heavy and brittle, with a density of 6.9-7.2 g/cm³. It exhibits a metallic luster. It is opaque. ## Colors and Varieties Galenobismutite is tin-white, silver-white, or light gray. Surfaces exposed to air may develop a dull, yellowish, or iridescent tarnish. No distinct color varieties or commercial varieties are recognized. ## History and Name The mineral's name, given in 1878 by Swedish mineralogist Hjalmar Sjögren, comes from the Latin word *galena* (lead ore) and the element bismuth, reflecting its chemical composition. It was first described based on samples from the Nordmark mine (Värmland), Sweden. ## Uses Galenobismutite is a minor source of bismuth and silver, which it may contain as impurities. Due to its rarity and small accumulations, it is primarily of scientific and collector's interest.

It is soft and can be scratched with a copper wire. ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals Galenobismutite is often confused with bismuthinite, which has a very similar appearance and physical properties; differentiation requires chemical analysis (bismuthinite does not contain lead). It can also be confused with other sulfosalts, such as cosalite or lillianite, from which it is practically impossible to distinguish in hand samples. It differs from stibnite by its higher density and the absence of stibnite's characteristic perfect cleavage. ## Crystal Forms Crystals are usually elongated along one axis, taking the form of rods, needles, or blades. They often exhibit vertical striations. It occurs in radial aggregates, tangled fibrous aggregates, and also as granular masses embedded in rock.

## Genesis Galenobismutite is a hydrothermal mineral, forming in medium- to high-temperature ore veins. It forms in association with other bismuth and lead minerals. ## Mineral Associations It most commonly co-occurs with bismuthinite, cosalite, galena, native gold, pyrite, chalcopyrite, quartz, and other bismuth and lead sulfosalts. ## Localities Important localities worldwide include: Nordmark mine in Sweden (type locality); Falun in Sweden; Baita Bihor (formerly Rézbánya) in Romania; Ivigtut mine in Greenland; Little Dalles north of Leadville in Colorado, USA; Hedley in British Columbia, Canada; and some deposits in Bolivia and Australia (New South Wales).

## Quality Criteria Specimens with well-formed, sharp, and undamaged crystals with a strong metallic luster are most valued by collectors. Rich, radial, or tangled aggregates of acicular crystals on a contrasting matrix, e.g., quartz, are particularly attractive. Specimens without tarnish and with preserved silver-white color are more highly prized. ## Popular Localities Classic and prized specimens come from historical localities in Sweden (Nordmark, Falun) and Baita Bihor in Romania. Specimens from these locations, especially well-preserved ones, are sought after in the collector's market.

Care and storage

## Cleaning Galenobismutite specimens should be cleaned very carefully, using a soft brush to remove dust. Isopropyl alcohol can be used to remove greasy stains, but water should be avoided as it can accelerate oxidation. Always dry the specimen thoroughly. ## What to Avoid Avoid contact with water and humid air, which cause dulling and tarnish formation. The mineral is sensitive to acids and other chemicals. As a soft and brittle mineral, it is susceptible to scratches and mechanical damage. ## Storage It is recommended to store galenobismutite in a dry place, preferably in a closed display box with a desiccant, to limit the oxidation process and preserve its metallic luster.
