Diagnostic features
## Identification Characteristic features of gajardoite-(NH₄) are its unique mode of occurrence as white, woolly or cotton-like aggregates with a silky luster. Its origin is also crucial for identification – as a secondary product formed in an arid climate, in paragenesis with arsenic minerals (realgar) and in an ammonia-rich environment (e.g., from guano). ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals It can be confused with other white, fibrous secondary minerals (so-called efflorescences), such as halotrichite or epsomite. However, its specific formation environment (association with realgar and guano) is a strong diagnostic indicator. Definitive and certain differentiation requires advanced analytical methods, such as X-ray diffraction (XRD) or chemical microanalysis (EDS). ## Crystal Forms It forms very fine, acicular or hair-like crystals that intertwine into flexible, felted or woolly aggregates.
Geological environment
## Genesis Gajardoite-(NH₄) is a secondary mineral with a very specific genesis. It forms in desert conditions as a product of post-mining activity. It is formed by the reaction of ammonia-rich solutions, originating from nearby guano deposits, with arsenic minerals, mainly realgar (AsS). This process occurs in a dry and saline environment. ## Mineral Associations This mineral occurs in direct proximity to realgar, orpiment, native sulfur, and halite. ## Localities The only confirmed and described locality of gajardoite-(NH₄) in the world is the Torrecillas mine, located in the Salar Grande area, Iquique Province, Tarapacá Region in northern Chile.

## Quality Criteria As an extremely rare mineral, any specimen with visible and identifiable aggregates of gajardoite-(NH₄) is valuable. The most highly prized samples are those with abundant, pure white, "fluffy" aggregates, contrasting well with the rock matrix. The presence of well-formed associated minerals, especially intensely red realgar, adds additional value. ## Popular Localities Collector specimens come exclusively from the type locality – the Torrecillas mine in Chile. Due to its rarity and recent discovery, the mineral is only available from specialized dealers of rare mineral species.
Care and storage
## Cleaning The mineral is extremely delicate and likely sensitive to water. It should absolutely not be cleaned wet or with ultrasonics. It is safest to leave the specimen uncleaned. If necessary, dust can be very carefully removed with a soft brush or a photographic air blower, avoiding direct contact with the fibers. ## What to Avoid Avoid contact with water, chemicals, and moisture. The mineral is very brittle, so it should be protected from shocks and vibrations. As an arsenic mineral, it is potentially toxic. Avoid inhaling dust and wash hands after any contact with the specimen. Keep away from children and pets. ## Storage Specimens of gajardoite-(NH₄) should be stored in a sealed, closed "micromount" box to protect them from mechanical damage, dust, and humidity changes. The box should be clearly labeled with the mineral name and a toxicity warning.
