Gahnite is a rare mineral from the spinel group, most often characterized by its dark green color and occurrence in well-formed, octahedral crystals.

Diagnostic features
## Identification The most important diagnostic feature of gahnite is its characteristic crystal habit – they are almost always sharp, well-formed octahedra. In combination with high hardness (scratches quartz), vitreous luster, and most often dark green color, this allows for its relatively certain identification. It does not exhibit magnetism. ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals It is most difficult to distinguish from other spinels, especially from dark green pleonaste (a variety of spinel) and hercynite. Without advanced chemical analyses (e.g., EDS), distinguishing members of the spinel group can be impossible. It is distinguished from magnetite by its lack of magnetism and lighter streak. From garnets (e.g., andradite), it is distinguished by its crystal form (octahedra vs. dodecahedra/icositetrahedra) and often a different shade of green. ## Crystal Forms Gahnite crystallizes in the isometric system, forming almost exclusively octahedral crystals. Modifications in the form of rhombic dodecahedral faces are less common. Crystals often occur as twins, according to the so-called spinel law, where two octahedra are intergrown along one of the faces.
Geological environment
## Genesis Gahnite forms under various geological conditions. It is most commonly found in metamorphic rocks, such as skarns, gneisses, and schists, formed as a result of the metamorphism of zinc-rich sediments. It also occurs in granites and granitic pegmatites, where it crystallizes from residual, zinc-rich fluids. Less commonly, it is found in metal ore deposits, especially in VMS (Volcanogenic Massive Sulfide) deposits that have undergone metamorphism. ## Mineral Associations In granitic pegmatites, gahnite co-occurs with quartz, feldspars, muscovite, beryl, columbite, and cassiterite. In metamorphic rocks, its typical associated minerals include calcite, diopside, franklinite, willemite, rhodochrosite, and garnets. In sulfide deposits, it is often accompanied by sphalerite, galena, and chalcopyrite. ## Localities The classic locality from which the mineral was described is the Falun mine in Sweden. Significant specimens come from the zinc mines in Franklin and Sterling Hill, New Jersey (USA), where it occurs in association with franklinite and willemite. Other important localities include Broken Hill in Australia (large, well-formed crystals), the pegmatite region of Minas Gerais in Brazil, as well as numerous occurrences in Nigeria, Russia (Urals), Germany, and Italy.

For collectors
## Quality Criteria The most prized by collectors are large, sharply terminated, undamaged crystals with an ideal octahedral habit. Specimens with intense, pure colors – especially green, blue, or less commonly yellow – are highly valued. Transparency significantly increases the mineral's value. Attractive compositions also include well-formed gahnite crystals embedded in a contrasting rock matrix (e.g., in white calcite or quartz). ## Popular Localities The best specimens in the world are considered to be those from Broken Hill in New South Wales (Australia), from where large, black, lustrous octahedra originate. Historically important and still sought after are specimens from Franklin, New Jersey (USA), often with an unusual blue color. Good quality crystals also come from pegmatites in Brazil and Nigeria.
Care and storage
## Cleaning Gahnite specimens can be safely cleaned with warm soapy water and a soft brush. Ultrasonic cleaners can also be used, but with caution, especially for specimens with inclusions or fractures. ## What to Avoid Gahnite is a hard and chemically stable mineral, resistant to most acids. However, sudden temperature changes should be avoided, as they can theoretically cause cracks within crystals (thermal shock). ## Storage As a hard mineral, gahnite can scratch other, softer minerals. It is recommended to store it in separate boxes or pouches to avoid damaging other specimens in the collection. It is resistant to light and moisture.
