Gachingite is an extremely rare gold seleno-telluride, forming microscopic grains in precious metal deposits.
Description
## Characteristics Gachingite is a mineral with a metallic luster and a grayish-white to steel-gray color. It occurs as very small, anhedral (irregular) grains, whose size does not exceed 150 micrometers. These grains are usually intergrown with other similar ore minerals, forming complex aggregates. Due to the microscopic size of its occurrences, its visual characteristics can only be assessed under high magnification. ## Physical Properties The mineral is opaque and characterized by a metallic luster. Its hardness and density have not yet been precisely determined due to the small size of the samples. ## Colors and Varieties Gachingite has a consistent, grayish-white or steel-gray color. As a mineral defined by a specific chemical composition within an isomorphic series, it does not form distinct color varieties. ## History and Name The name gachingite comes from its discovery locality – the Gachinga (Russian: Гачинга) gold, silver, and tellurium deposit on the Kamchatka Peninsula in Russia. It was officially recognized as a new mineral species by the International Mineralogical Association (IMA) in 2021. ## Applications Due to its extreme rarity and microscopic size, gachingite has no industrial applications. It is solely an object of scientific interest and a valuable acquisition for specialized collectors of microscopic minerals (so-called micromounts).
Diagnostic features
## Identification Identification of gachingite is impossible based on visual characteristics alone. Its metallic luster and gray color are typical of many sulfides, tellurides, and selenides. Reliable identification requires advanced analytical techniques, such as X-ray microanalysis (EDS/WDS) in an electron microscope, to confirm its unique chemical composition – the presence of gold, tellurium, and selenium in specific proportions. ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals Gachingite is visually indistinguishable from many minerals with which it co-occurs. These include other tellurides and selenides of gold, silver, and mercury, such as calaverite, sylvanite, hessite, petzite, altaite, coloradoite, or aguilarite. The only distinguishing feature is the chemical composition. ## Crystal Forms This mineral does not form well-developed crystals. It occurs exclusively as anhedral, irregular grains and inclusions in other minerals.
Geological environment
## Genesis Gachingite forms under low-sulfur epithermal mineralization conditions. Its crystallization occurs in hydrothermal quartz-adularia-rhodochrosite veins, rich in gold, tellurium, and selenium. ## Mineral Associations This mineral occurs in association with a rich assemblage of other ore minerals. It is most commonly accompanied by: native gold, calaverite, sylvanite, petzite, hessite, stützite, altaite, coloradoite, aguilarite, and naumannite. The gangue minerals in its environment are quartz, adularia, and rhodochrosite. ## Localities The only confirmed locality of gachingite in the world is its type locality – the Gachinga deposit in the Maletoyvayam ore district, Koryak Upland (Kamchatka Peninsula, Russia).

## Quality Criteria For a microscopic mineral like gachingite, the primary criterion for value is the certainty of its identification, confirmed by analytical methods. Additional value is provided by the abundance of associated minerals on the specimen and the relative size (though still microscopic) and purity of the gachingite grains. Specimens where intergrowths with other rare tellurides can be observed are particularly prized. ## Popular Localities All known gachingite specimens come from a single locality in the world – the Gachinga deposit in Russia. This is the only locality from which collectors can obtain this mineral.
Care and storage
## Cleaning Gachingite specimens, occurring as microscopic grains, practically do not require cleaning and it should not be attempted. Any attempt at mechanical or chemical cleaning risks irreversible damage or loss of the mineral. If dust needs to be removed from the matrix specimen, a gentle stream of compressed air can be used. ## What to Avoid Avoid contact with all chemicals, including acids and detergents. Tellurides and selenides can be sensitive to oxidation, so the specimen should not be exposed to moisture. The use of ultrasonic cleaners and any form of mechanical cleaning is also not recommended. ## Storage Gachingite specimens should be stored under stable conditions, away from dust, moisture, and sudden temperature changes. The safest way is to place them in a sealed, plastic "micromount" box, which protects the delicate material from physical damage and external factors.
