## Characteristics Fülöppite is a rare mineral from the sulfosalt group, chemically a complex lead and antimony sulfide (Pb₃Sb₈S₁₅). It forms small, elongated crystals with a prismatic or acicular habit, which often intergrow into subparallel or radial aggregates, and sometimes into rosette-like forms. Its surface has a characteristic, strong metallic luster. The color of the mineral is lead-gray to steel-gray, and over time it may become covered with a bluish or iridescent tarnish. ## Physical Properties This mineral is relatively soft, with a Mohs hardness of 2.5, meaning it can be scratched with a fingernail. It is quite dense, with a specific gravity of 5.23 g/cm³. It is completely opaque. It exhibits good cleavage in one direction. ## Colors and Varieties Fülöppite occurs in uniform shades of gray – from lead-gray to steel-gray. A colored tarnish, resulting from oxidation, may appear on its surface. There are no distinct color varieties or commercial varieties. ## History and Name The mineral was first described in 1929 by I. de Finály and S. Koch. Its name commemorates Dr. Béla Fülöpp (1863-1938), a Hungarian lawyer, politician, and renowned mineral collector, from whose collection the studied specimen originated. ## Uses Fülöppite has no industrial application. It is solely an object of scientific interest and a valued acquisition in advanced systematic and regional mineral collections.

Its relatively low hardness (2.5) is also helpful in identification. ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals Fülöppite can be confused with other lead and antimony sulfosalts, such as zinkenite, jamesonite, or plagionite. Zinkenite most often forms fibrous or acicular aggregates without distinct crystal faces. Jamesonite often occurs as tangled, hair-like aggregates. Stibnite, although similar in appearance, has perfect cleavage and usually forms much larger, better-formed crystals. Reliable differentiation of these minerals often requires advanced analytical methods, such as X-ray diffraction (XRD). ## Crystal Forms Fülöppite crystals are monoclinic, with a habit ranging from short to elongated prisms, often with longitudinal striations on the faces. They typically occur as aggregates of crystals arranged parallel or radially, forming small "hedgehog" or rosette-like forms.

## Genesis Fülöppite is a hydrothermal mineral, crystallizing at relatively low temperatures. It forms in ore veins rich in lead and antimony. ## Mineral Associations It most commonly co-occurs with other sulfosalts and sulfides. Its typical associated minerals include: stibnite, zinkenite, semseyite, andorite, fizélyite, plagionite, and robinsonite. ## Localities The most important and classic locality for fülöppite, from which the world's best specimens originate, is the Dealul Crucii mine in Baia Mare (Romania) – this is its type locality. It is also known from historical sites in Příbram (Czech Republic) and Wolfsberg in the Harz Mountains (Germany), as well as from some deposits in Bolivia (e.g., in the Oruro department).

## Quality Criteria The collector's value of fülöppite depends on several factors. Specimens with well-formed, sharp, and lustrous crystals, forming aesthetic aggregates, for example in rosette form, are most highly prized. The size of the crystals is also important, although they rarely exceed a few millimeters in length. Specimens on a rock matrix and in association with other rare sulfosalts are more desirable. The absence of mechanical damage is crucial. ## Popular Localities Specimens from the type locality – the Dealul Crucii mine in Romania – are by far the most sought after by collectors. They are considered the global standard for this mineral.

Care and storage

## Cleaning Fülöppite specimens should only be dry-cleaned, using a soft brush to remove dust. It is sensitive to moisture and chemicals, so contact with water, and especially with acids and detergents, should be avoided. ## What to Avoid The mineral is soft and brittle, thus requiring careful handling. It should be protected from impacts and scratches. As a sulfide, it is susceptible to oxidation, so storage in a humid environment, which can accelerate the tarnishing process and damage crystal surfaces, should be avoided. ## Storage The best way to store fülöppite is to place it in a closed, dry container or collector's display case. This will limit access to moisture and airborne contaminants, protecting the specimen from dulling and degradation.
