Description

## Characteristics Franklinphilite is a very rare mineral belonging to the stilpnomelane group, being a hydrated potassium and manganese silicate. It forms aggregates of small, platy crystals resembling mica. These aggregates often have a fan-like, radial, or spherical habit. Due to the small size of the crystals, it is primarily a micromount mineral, rarely visible to the naked eye in distinct forms. ## Physical Properties Franklinphilite is relatively soft, with a hardness of about 3 on the Mohs scale. Its lamellae are brittle. The luster is vitreous to pearly, especially noticeable on cleavage planes. Thin lamellae of the mineral are translucent. ## Colors and Varieties This mineral has a characteristic dark brown to almost black color. The streak is pale brown. There are no distinct color or commercial varieties, which is typical for such a rare mineral. ## History and Name The name franklinphilite comes from its discovery locality – the Franklin Mine in Sussex County, New Jersey, USA – and from the Greek word *phyllon* (φύλλον), meaning "leaf," referring to its platy structure. The mineral was described and approved as a new species in 1992 by Dunn, Peacor, and Ramik. ## Uses Franklinphilite has no industrial applications. Its significance is purely scientific and collectible, being an object of desire among specialists collecting minerals from Franklin and rare minerals.

## Genesis Franklinphilite is a hydrothermal mineral. It formed during a late stage of mineralization within a metamorphosed, stratiform zinc, manganese, and iron ore deposit in Franklin, New Jersey. It is a product of low-temperature alteration processes. ## Mineral Associations This mineral occurs in association with other, often rare minerals from the Franklin deposit. It is most commonly found in association with bustamite, willemite, calcite, franklinite, and rhodochrosite. ## Localities The only confirmed locality for franklinphilite in the world is its type locality – the Franklin Mine, in Franklin, Sussex County, New Jersey, USA.
