Diagnostic features
## Identification Characteristic features of franklinphilite include its dark brown color, platy habit forming radial or spherical aggregates, and pearly luster on cleavage surfaces. A key diagnostic clue is its origin – exclusively from the Franklin Mine in New Jersey. ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals Franklinphilite can be confused with other minerals of the stilpnomelane group, as well as with dark micas such as biotite. Differentiation from stilpnomelane is usually impossible without advanced chemical analysis (to determine potassium dominance) or X-ray diffraction (XRD). It differs from biotite by the lack of elasticity of its lamellae. ## Crystal Forms This mineral does not form well-developed, single crystals. It occurs in the form of platy, bladed, or fibrous aggregates. These aggregates often arrange into radial, fan-like, and sometimes spherulitic (spherical) forms.
Geological environment
## Genesis Franklinphilite is a hydrothermal mineral. It formed during a late stage of mineralization within a metamorphosed, stratiform zinc, manganese, and iron ore deposit in Franklin, New Jersey. It is a product of low-temperature alteration processes. ## Mineral Associations This mineral occurs in association with other, often rare minerals from the Franklin deposit. It is most commonly found in association with bustamite, willemite, calcite, franklinite, and rhodochrosite. ## Localities The only confirmed locality for franklinphilite in the world is its type locality – the Franklin Mine, in Franklin, Sussex County, New Jersey, USA.
