## Identification Key features for identifying franckeite include its black color, metallic luster, low hardness, and, above all, the flexibility of its thin lamellae and their tendency to bend and form radial aggregates. Perfect cleavage in one direction is also very characteristic. ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals Franckeite can be confused with other sulfosalts, but it can be distinguished by several features: - **Cylindrite**: Forms distinct, smooth cylinders or tubes, whereas franckeite forms undulated lamellae and rosettes. - **Stibnite**: Is brittle and inelastic, and its crystals are typically prismatic and longitudinally striated. - **Boulangerite**: Most often occurs in fibrous, acicular, or matted aggregates, rarely forming tabular crystals. - **Molybdenite**: Is much softer (hardness 1-1.5), feels greasy to the touch, and leaves a dark gray streak on paper. ## Crystal Forms Franckeite crystallizes in thin to thick tabular forms, which are almost always curved or undulated. Flat, single crystals are rare. Most often, it forms spherical, radial aggregates and rosettes, composed of densely packed lamellae.

## Genesis Franckeite is a hydrothermal mineral. It forms in ore veins under medium to high-temperature conditions. It is typical of Bolivian tin and silver deposits. ## Mineral Associations This mineral often co-occurs with other sulfides and sulfosalts. Its most common associations include cylindrite, stannite, cassiterite, wurtzite, pyrite, galena, sphalerite, and jamesonite. ## Localities The most important and well-known franckeite localities in the world are in Bolivia, which provides the best collector specimens. Key localities include historical mines in the Oruro Department (e.g., San José mine) and in Poopó (the type locality).

## Quality Criteria The most highly prized franckeite specimens are those that form well-developed, large, and distinct rosettes or radial aggregates. Specimens in which the curved lamellae are clearly visible and undamaged are desirable. The value of a specimen increases when it is embedded in a contrasting rock matrix, such as quartz or pyrite. ## Popular Localities Specimens from classic localities in Bolivia, especially from mines around the cities of Oruro and Poopó, are by far the most sought after by collectors. Specimens from these locations are considered the global standard for this mineral.
Care and storage
## Cleaning Franckeite specimens are very delicate and require careful handling. For dust removal, it is best to use a soft brush or compressed air from a safe distance. Wet cleaning should be avoided, especially the use of ultrasonic cleaners, which can irreversibly damage the fragile lamellae. ## What to Avoid The mineral is soft and has perfect cleavage, making it very susceptible to impact, scratches, and pressure. Contact with chemicals and acids should be avoided. As a sulfide, it may be sensitive to humid air, which can cause oxidation and tarnishing of the surface over time. ## Storage It is recommended to store specimens in separate, padded boxes to prevent contact with harder minerals. It should be protected from dust, humidity, and sudden temperature changes. Display should be in a closed display case.
