## Characteristics Francisite is a mineral from the selenite group, chemically defined as a copper bismuth selenite with additional oxygen and chlorine anions. It occurs as very small, tabular or bladed crystals, which rarely exceed 1 mm in length. These crystals often form rosette-like or radial aggregates. Its most characteristic visual feature is an intense, dark green to emerald green color. ## Physical Properties This mineral is characterized by a vitreous luster on crystal surfaces. No color or commercial varieties have been distinguished. ## History and Name The mineral is named in honor of Carl A. Francis (born 1947), long-time curator of the Harvard University Mineralogical Museum in Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA. It was approved as a new mineral species by the International Mineralogical Association (IMA) in 1990. It was described based on specimens found in the Iron Monarch mine in South Australia. ## Applications Francisite has no industrial application. Its significance is purely scientific and collectible, being a coveted item for specialized collectors of rare minerals.

## Genesis Francisite is a secondary mineral formed in the oxidation zones (gossans) of ore deposits rich in bismuth and selenium. It forms as a result of the weathering of primary minerals containing these elements in the presence of solutions rich in copper and chlorides. ## Mineral Associations This mineral co-occurs with other rare secondary minerals. In the type locality (Iron Monarch, Australia), it was found in association with preisingerite, walfordite, native copper, cuprite, tenorite, cassiterite, hematite, and quartz. In the Tsumeb mine (Namibia), it is accompanied by anglesite, smithsonite, otavite, olivenite, azurite, and malachite, among others. ## Localities The most important and well-documented francisite localities in the world are: - Iron Monarch Mine, Middleback Ranges, Eyre Peninsula, South Australia - type locality. - Tsumeb Mine, Namibia - known for well-formed microcrystals. - San Francisco Mine, El Desierto deposit, Chile.

Care and storage

## Cleaning Francisite specimens should be cleaned with the utmost care, using only compressed air to remove dust.
