Diagnostic features
## Identification Fluoro-richterite is most easily recognized by its characteristic habit of long, prismatic crystals, often with a hexagonal cross-section. Important features include its vitreous luster and the typical amphibole cleavage angles (approximately 56° and 124°). The color, most often in shades of brown, is also helpful. ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals It can be confused with other amphiboles, such as hornblende, arfvedsonite, or other minerals from the richterite series. It differs from hornblende by its lighter color and often better transparency. It differs from arfvedsonite by the absence of characteristic pleochroism in blue and green shades. Definitive distinction from other richterites requires advanced chemical analyses (EDS, WDS) to determine fluorine dominance. ## Crystal Forms Crystals are typically elongated, columnar, or prismatic. They often form radial aggregates or fibrous masses. They also occur as embedded grains in the host rock.
Geological environment
## Genesis Fluoro-richterite is a metamorphic mineral. It forms under conditions of contact and regional metamorphism, in rocks rich in sodium and magnesium, such as skarns, marbles, or carbonatites. Its crystallization occurs at relatively high temperatures and pressures, in a fluorine-rich environment. ## Mineral Associations It often co-occurs with minerals such as calcite, dolomite, diopside, phlogopite, titanite, apatite, as well as other amphiboles and pyroxenes. ## Localities The most important and well-known localities, which yield the best collector's specimens, are in Canada (Wilberforce and Tory Hill, Ontario) and Russia (Kovdor mine on the Kola Peninsula). It also occurs in Iron Hill, Colorado (USA), and in several places in Sweden (e.g., Långban).

## Quality Criteria The most highly valued specimens of fluoro-richterite are those with well-formed, sharply terminated, and undamaged crystals of significant size. Desirable features include intense, vitreous luster, good transparency, and an attractive, saturated color (especially shades of brown and green). Specimens on matrix, contrasting with bright calcite, are particularly sought after. ## Popular Localities Classic and most highly prized collector's specimens come from Wilberforce in Ontario, Canada. They provide large, well-formed crystals. Specimens from the Kovdor massif on the Kola Peninsula in Russia are equally well-known, often characterized by excellent luster and interesting forms.
Care and storage
## Cleaning Fluoro-richterite specimens can be safely cleaned with lukewarm water and a mild soap, using a soft toothbrush. Strong detergents should be avoided. After washing, the specimen should be thoroughly rinsed, preferably in distilled water, and left to dry completely. ## What to Avoid The mineral is sensitive to strong acids, which can damage its surface. Ultrasonic and steam cleaners should be avoided, as vibrations and sudden temperature changes can cause cracks, especially in brittle crystals. It should not be exposed to prolonged intense sunlight. ## Storage Collector's specimens of fluoro-richterite are best stored in separate, padded boxes or display cases to prevent scratches and chips from harder minerals. Due to its brittleness, it should be protected from drops and impacts.
